SOL (Standards of Learning) Testing Updates-Elementary Grades 3-6

Across Virginia, students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) tests this spring. At Crossfield ES testing for grades 3-6 will be scheduled between May 10 and May 27, 2021.

We ask that all 3rd through 6th grade families complete this online Google intent form. Contact Lea Fadden (ltfadden@fcps.edu) at our school if you need help accessing or completing the form.

Below is a tentative SOL testing schedule for Crossfield:

SOL
  • All SOL tests must be taken in-person at school. SOL tests are not available for remote delivery from home.
  • If you do not wish for your student to take SOL tests at school this spring, you have the right to refuse testing.
  • If you choose to refuse the grade 3-8 SOL reading or mathematics test for your virtual student, you will have the opportunity for them to complete an alternative, non-SOL test at home. The Virginia Remote Student Progress Monitoring Test will provide information about strengths and areas for growth in grade level content standards.

Universal Screener Assessment

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment, i-Ready, for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students.

The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given one more time this year. Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, some students may not receive screening again.

Crossfield students will test as follows:

  • Kindergarten: May 11-21
  • First Grade: April 27-May 7
  • Second Grade: April 20-30
  • Third Grade: identified students, April 27-May 7
  • Fourth Grade: identified students, June 1-11
  • Fifth Grade: April 13-23
  • Sixth Grade: identified students, June 1-11

Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found here..  Another resource is this video, to help families be as supportive as possible as their students(s) take the i-Ready Diagnostic at home. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact our Crossfield test coordinator, Lea Fadden at ltfadden@fcps.edu.
