NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson families,

I want to make sure everyone is keeping up with the deluge of information coming at you. There are stories below to remind you about SOL Testing (schedule, deferring or refusing testing-DEADLINE TODAY-see story below), updating student laptops, upcoming Senior events, new VHSL physical form and the end of year schedule.

Next year students will return to Woodson 5 days a week. We will continue to practice the mitigation strategies and remain safe for all students and staff. If you want a tour or discussion of what this looks like in school, please feel free to reach out to me at cefloyd@fcps.edu and we will coordinate a visit to the building and discuss our procedures.

Have a wonderful weekend, stay safe, stay well and stay connected!

Dr. Floyd

April Chorus Concert

Woodson Chorus created a short virtual concert that can be viewed on YouTube. Enjoy!

2. Report Cards

3rd Quarter Report Cards were mailed this week. They are available to view in SIS ParentVUE or StudentVUE.

For the 2020-21 school year, high school students have until Monday, May 10th to designate the final mark for two of their current courses as Pass instead of final grades "A" through "D".  Additional information can be found on the FCPS Secondary Grading and Reporting site.

3. Spring SOL Testing

Students will be taking Standards of Learning (SOL) End of Course (EOC) tests as federal and state education departments have decided not to cancel assessments in May. Please see the email sent directly to parents on April 8th with details and a Google Form link that must be submitted by TODAY, Friday, April 16th.

If you did not receive the email on April 8th (Subject: WTW SOL Testing Notification - Action Needed), please reach out to your child's school counselor ASAP.

SOLs will take place on Monday-Wednesday, May 17th-19th.

Monday, May 17th - Science SOL
Tuesday, May 18th - Reading and History SOL
Wednesday, May 19th - Mathematics SOL

If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact Woodson's Assessment Coach, Kathleen Guinee at kpguinee@fcps.edu.

4. FCPSOn Student Laptop Updates Needed

Students who will be taking an SOL or digital AP exams this spring must have their laptops checked to ensure they can appropriately access the SOL testing software.

For students that are attending school in person, teachers will help students facilitate a check of their laptops in classes leading up to the SOL testing dates to ensure they’re updated appropriately. For those that are not up to date, tech support will be available during school hours to update laptops as needed.

Students who continue to learn virtually will have to come to school ahead of the SOL testing window in May to connect their laptops to the FCPS network, run the FCPS Health Check, and have their laptops updated if needed.

To help facilitate this, we will have tech support available on Monday afternoons from 1:30-5:30pm. No appointment is necessary, but students who are learning virtually must come by the school to check their laptop or else they will not be able to participate in SOL or digital AP testing this spring.

5. Attendance Calls During AP and SOL Testing

During AP, IB and SOL testing at high schools, morning attendance telephone calls, texts and e-mails to home will not occur through Friday, June 11th.

This temporary suspension reflects the fact that students are often in designated testing locations (in-person or virtually) during the normal attendance-taking time. The evening attendance telephone calls and e-mails will still remain in place.

The Morning Show

This week's episode of The Morning Show highlights Autism Acceptance Month, Month of the Military Child and more!

6. Senior Social - April Activity

Each month through the end of the school year, Woodson is planning in-person opportunities to celebrate the Class of 2021.

Our third Senior Social will take place on Monday, April 19th from 12-2pm (weather reschedule date: Monday, April 26th at 12 pm) in the Senior Parking Lot. This month’s theme is “Spring Egg Hunt”

These monthly events will take place outside, socially distanced following all CDC guidelines including the mandate to wear a mask during the entire event. If a student experiences any COVID-19 symptoms within 14 days of the event, please stay home.

Students can drive or walk to the event. We will have chairs set up 6 feet apart so that students can visit with each other, listen to music, and enjoy some treats. Students will want to dress for the weather.

7. Graduation for the Class of 2021

Graduation for the Woodson Class of 2021 is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2nd (rain date, Thursday, June 3rd) at 9am in Pat Cunningham Stadium at Woodson HS.

8. Senior Class Information Page

Want more information about upcoming dates and events for the Class of 2021 like Prom, graduation tickets, cap and gown pick up, etc.? Visit the Senior Class Information page on the Woodson website.

9. Upcoming Asynchronous or Virtual Learning Days

Tuesday and Wednesday, May 18th and 19th will be asynchronous learning days due to SOL testing.

Wednesday, June 2nd (rain date June 3) will be an asynchronous or virtual learning day for students in grades 9-12 due to the Woodson Class of 2021 Graduation.

In addition, Friday, June 4th will also be an asynchronous or virtual learning day as Woodson will be hosting another FCPS schools' graduation.

A final decision on the structure of these two days will be forthcoming.

Thank you for your understanding in this situation as we support another FCPS school.

10. NEW VHSL Physical Form for SY2021-22

This is the NEW VHSL approved Physical FormThis is the only version that can be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year. If you have a doctor fill out the old version (version that says in top right corner "revised February 2017), you will have to have your doctor complete the new one, which may require another appointment. So, please make sure the form you fill out says "revised January 2021" on the top right.

The VHSL Physical Form must be completed by a parent/guardian and doctor. In order for the physical to be accepted for the 2021-2022 school year, it cannot be filled out and dated by a doctor until May 1, 2021 or after. Once completed, please drop it off to Woodson's Activities Office, Woodson's Main Office or scan it to the Athletic Trainer Chris Hogge at chogge@fcps.edu. This must be turned in prior to participating in athletics.

The form is also available at https://www.vhsl.org/sports-medicine/physical-examination/, under Resources.

Mock AP Test

25 students from Mr. Wright's AP world history: modern class came to school on a Saturday for a mock AP test to prepare themselves for the real thing next month.

11. Course Requests for 2021-2022

All students have had an opportunity to complete academic advising for the 2021-2022 school year. Staffing for next year’s courses is dependent on student course selections.

To ensure that we have accurate course registration numbers, please review your child’s requested schedule in SIS ParentVUE or StudentVUE (click “Course Request” on the menu on the left hand side).

Contact your child’s school counselor by email with any schedule change requests.  Please do this as soon as possible.  If no changes are needed, you do not need to contact the counselor.

If your child applied for an academy class, he/she should have already received notice of the academy’s decision. If accepted, course changes, including adding the academy class to your child’s course request list, will be made at that time. Friday, April 30th will be the last day to make course selection changes for the 2021-2022 school year.

12. Diverse Books

The Equity Team will feature several photos from our faculty and staff, students, and parents reading diverse books in the Woodson Weekly. Please complete the Google form and share a picture of yourself with the diverse book that you are currently reading or plan on reading. Creating content that is diverse and inclusive is critical to learner success. Research has shown that diverse representation can help close gender and race gaps in education, and can create inclusive and productive course communities for all learners. Thus educators, parents, and guardians have an important role to play in creating diverse and inclusive content. If you are interested please share your photo using this Google form.

Woodson English Teacher, Julianne Sherman is currently reading Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas, The Truth about Alice by Jennifer Mathieu, The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, and Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)
