Franklin MS Weekly Update - March 26

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon! It was an exciting week at Franklin MS in our virtual and in-person learning environments. As the 3rd quarter comes to a close, I am very proud of the hard work, perseverance, and commitment of our students and staff. We finished the grading period strong and we are heading into the 4th quarter with lots of positive momentum.

We would like to send our best wishes to each of you for an enjoyable Spring Break next week. It is our hope that it is a time for all of you to relax, recharge, and spend time with family and friends.

As we continue to work through the final months of the school year together, please feel free to contact me at dpwright@fcps.edu at any time if there is anything we can do to help or if you have any questions.

The entire Franklin staff is grateful for everything you are doing to support our wonderful community and our amazing students.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Spring Break Travel Information from FCPS

Here are some tips to be aware of as families make plans for Spring Break:

  • Virginia Department of Health (VDH) urges all Virginians to avoid non-essential travel, especially if you are at higher risk of serious COVID-19 or if you will be visiting someone at higher risk of serious COVID-19. This recommendation applies to everyone, even if you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or have fully recovered from COVID-19.
  • FCPS does not currently have travel restrictions. Students are not required to quarantine or provide COVID 19 test results for either domestic or international travel. Parents may opt to keep their students at home for 14 days after they return from travel; however, it is not required.
  • Per the Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment Form, parents and guardians have committed to a daily health screening of their children attending in-person instruction. These daily health screenings  will be completed on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.
  • Any student, staff or visitor demonstrating symptoms of illness is asked to stay home to help “Stop the Spread” of COVID-19. Updates and information is here: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/coronavirus/travel-to-areas-with-widespread-ongoing-community-spread/https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

Franklin MS Virtual After School Program

  • There will be no After School activities on Friday, March 26th. All clubs and activities will resume on Tuesday, April 6th. Have a great, safe Spring Break!
  • If you have any questions about the After School Program, please feel free to contact Mrs. White.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Franklin Middle School will be teaching the Human, Growth and Development (HGD) Lessons on the following dates:

  • 7th graders April 13 to 16
  • 8th graders April 20 to 23

All lessons are designed to be gender-specific, and students will be receiving a new gender-specific BBCU link.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who opt-out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt-out forms are available online for Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fleParents/guardians wishing to opt their child out of instruction may complete and return the opt-out form or scan and email a copy of the completed form. An opt-out request can also be made in an email which indicates the lesson(s) the child will be opted out of. The actual opt-out form is not required. Opt-out emails should be addressed to Mr. Howes at srhowes@fcps.edu with the subject line FLE opt-out: Student last name

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Middle School (7-8). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent Vue https://www.fcps.blackboard.com. Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/in/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.
