Ms. Sweet’s in-person students debating topics interactively with virtual students!

A message from Principal, Amy Miller:

Dear Kilmer Families,

This past week Dr. Brabrand shared updates on the Return to School during a School Board Meeting. Looking ahead to the 2021-2022 school year, Dr. Brabrand shared that FCPS is preparing to return students to five days of in person instruction. Below is information from the news release sent out following the School Board Meeting:

We have shown that we can return our students and staff to our buildings in a way that is safe and steady. We are confident that we can deliver on a five-day return for all students in the fall, knowing that, while we can adapt to any situation, in-person learning really is the best option for our students and staff,” said FCPS Superintendent Scott S. Brabrand.

FCPS will continue to work with the Fairfax County Health Department and abide by the CDC’s social distancing guidelines to prepare for its five-day return. The school division will continue to monitor updated health guidance, will investigate additional PPE resources and safety protocols, continue to analyze the potential for COVID-19 testing, and prepare schools for changing social distancing mandates as social distancing is reduced from 6 feet to 3 feet.

Next week  (March 22 - March 26) is Kilmer Spirit Week. We have a variety of themed days to show school spirit. We are also hosting a Virtual Family Trivia Night on Thursday, March 25 at 7:00 PM. The Virtual Family Trivia Night can be accessed through Schoology. Please see below for additional details.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

National Junior Honor Society

The next mandatory all candidate meeting is after school on Tuesday, March 23, in the NJHS BBCU link from 2:45-3:45.

During the January 28th NJHS meeting for Stage 2: Preparation and Planning, candidates examined ways others have effected change and the necessary skills needed to do service. They also supported one another in small group discussion boards. We are set to move forward into Stage 3: Action

NJHS candidates have been assigned a NJHS Digital Notebook for Reflections. Candidates are encouraged to record their reflections, plans, activities, research findings, task lists, group communications, photos, etc., in the notebook. They will want to have these materials in one place when it is time for Stage 5: Demonstration.

Kilmer’s National Junior Honor Society will host a virtual Service Learning Gallery and Induction Ceremony in June 2021 for parents, community members and students. Join us Monday, April 12, at 6 p.m. to hear from Julie Ann Sosa, MD, Leon Goldman MD Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). What’s on the Shelf: News from the Kilmer Library

At the Kilmer Library, we are committed to sharing resources to help our students and families learn more about antiracism. With that in mind, we have just put together an #ownvoices collection of books written by Asian-Pacific American authors. We encourage our students to explore these tites, to check them out, and to keep learning.

In other news, we are now welcoming students into the library during our 4th period office hours. Students can sign up to visit the library, find books, get librarian recommendations, check out and more. Next week is a great time to visit to stock up on books before spring break! Information and sign-up is available on Schoology in the KMS Library course. Message librarian Gretchen Hazlin (gehazlin@fcps.edu) with questions.
