Did You Know…From 1995 to 1997 Kaiser Permanente conducted a study by collected data on adverse childhood experience (ACE Study).  Over 17,000 Health Maintenance Organization members from Southern California receiving physical exams completed confidential surveys regarding their childhood experiences and current health status and behaviors.  The CDC and Kaiser joined forces and continue to use outcomes of the ACE Study to educate doctors, communities, and mental health provider on the long term effects of negative childhood experiences.

Here is more information on the ACE Study - https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/childabuseandneglect/acestudy/index.html

FCPS-issued Laptops

As we are now utilizing concurrent learning, please be sure that you are using your FCPS-issued laptop regularly. FCPS laptops are optimized to work on the school network, unlike devices you may be using at home. Additionally, many school programs and tests are required to be run on your FCPS laptop. If you have not been using your FCPS laptop regularly, please begin doing so now to prepare yourself to bring it every day you are in the building. If your laptop requires updates, drive to the nearest FCPS school and turn the laptop on in the parking lot. The laptop will connect to the FCPS network and download important updates. Please submit an IT request if you are having difficulty with your school laptops.

SPRING INTO ACTION - donate food items for Share of McLean’s spring food drive in the LHS parking lot on Mon, March 22, 10:30 am-2:30 pm. Let’s help Share and help our neighbors. Share is currently supporting over 300 local families with food supplies.

When dropping off items at LHS, look for your grade’s drop-off station in the parking lot (and wear a mask). The grade with the most participants and/or donated food items will be recognized!

Take a selfie in front of the Share banner and submit it on x2vol for an hour of service learning. Want to help? Parent and student volunteers are needed! Click here to volunteer.

Substance Abuse Prevention

LHS Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Kelly Rankin will present the second in a three-part parent education series on substance abuse prevention on March 25. In the 20-minute session, Ms. Rankin will discuss the development of the teenage brain and the impact of drugs on brain development.

Each session is offered twice -- choose the time that works for you! Click here to join a 12 pm or 7 pm session on the following dates:

Drugs and the Teenage Brain -- Mar 25

Drug Trends: Identifying Common Household Items and Drug Culture -- Apr 22

The series is designed to help build awareness and arm parents with knowledge and tools to identify early signs of substance use, as well as discuss parents’ role in prevention and how to have effective conversations with teens about addiction. Ms. Rankin is a great resource for our students and parents. Questions? Contact her at Krankin@fcps.edu or 703-287-2744.

Langley Career Fair is back and better than ever! This year, our new Virtual Career Connections will allow students a convenient, virtual way to connect with local professionals, ask questions about their career paths and seek advice in finding possible summer internships or learn more about that future dream job! Students mark your calendars for this event on Blackboard Collaborate on Monday, April 12th from 10AM to 1PM. Our Career Connections student committee is still seeking professionals in arts, engineering, medical, government, sciences, and public relations to participate. If you’re interested in participating please email us at: langleycareerday@gmail.com or fill out this form. We look forward to hosting this exciting virtual event that all of our students can attend and enjoy!

Are your service hours up-to-date and approved?

Saxons:  log on to your x2Vol account through Naviance to make sure your service hours are up-to-date.  Service learning is not required by FCPS but strongly encouraged here at Langley. Students who earn 40 hours or more of service during their four years in high schools will receive the Service Learning Cord to be worn at graduation.  If you need assistance logging your hours, visit the LHS website at https://langleyhs.fcps.edu/student-life-activities/service-learning for instructions on tracking hours.  Please remember all service hours must be verified by an adult before they can be approved (LHS allows parents to verify hours during COVID). If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Shomaker in Student Services at enshomaker@fcps.edu

Spring Break Travel

Spring break is just around the corner. Here are some tips to be aware of as families and FCPS staff make plans:

  • Virginia Department of Health (VDH) urges all Virginians to avoid non-essential travel, especially if you are at higher risk of serious COVID-19 or if you will be visiting someone at higher risk of serious COVID-19. This recommendation applies to everyone, even if you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or have fully recovered from COVID-19.
  • FCPS does not currently have travel restrictions. Students are not required to quarantine or provide COVID 19 test results for either domestic or international travel. Parents may opt to keep their students at home for 14 days after they return from travel, however, it is not required.
  • Per the Student Health and Safety Guidance Document, a Daily Health Screening Questionnaire will be required for all students attending in-person instruction. These daily health screening questionnaires will be completed on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.

Any student, staff or visitor demonstrating symptoms of illness is asked to stay home to help “Stop the Spread” of COVID-19. Updates and information is here: https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/coronavirus/coronavirus/travel-to-areas-with-widespread-ongoing-community-spread/ https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

Buy a Leaf for the Courtyard

Buy a leaf -- or more -- for the Courtyard Legacy Tree fundraiser! We still have an empty Science Courtyard that needs landscaping.

To fund the project, donate a leaf to the Langley Legacy Tree, the beautiful wall sculpture that is "growing" in the Langley Lobby, across from the Main Office.

The Legacy Tree is a permanent and prominent record of generous courtyard contributors. Choose your engraved message — leaves make wonderful tributes to students, teachers, family and friends!

9

Giving levels are copper leaf ($50), silver leaf ($100), gold leaf ($200) and acorn or bird ($500). To donate your tree leaves/acorns/birds, click on the Langley PTSA homepage and scroll down to the Legacy Tree article. Questions? Email chrissielavin1@gmail.com
