Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

It was an eventful week with our final groups of students who are returning in person joining us - even Dr. Brabrand got in on the excitement!  You can check out the video here.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our Virtual Family Fun Night tonight, Friday, 3/19 at 6:30pm. Special thanks to our PTA for putting together this event, as well as our upcoming Virtual Assembly on Monday, 3/22 at 1:30pm!  During this assembly, students can go on a virtual dogsledding adventure and will have time to ask questions with our explorer experts.  You may find the link in the All Students Schoology Course.

As a reminder, next Friday, 3/26 is the last day of the third quarter. Students will be dismissed two hours early and attend their in-person or virtual classes as planned.  Instruction will end and dismissal will begin at 1:30pm.

Spring break is just around the corner: Monday, 3/29 - Friday, 4/2. Also, Monday, 4/5, is a teacher workday and a holiday for students. There will be no Morning Meeting, live instruction, or assignments for students to complete.  FCPS is committed to providing all students access to meals during this break from school. See the food distribution web page for more information. Additionally, the United States Department of Agriculture announced this week that no-cost breakfast and lunch meals for all students have been extended through September 30.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Screening for School-Based Services

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in grades K-8.  Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extensions of the Program of Studies (POS).  Teachers, administrators, and advanced academic resource teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of school-based services in each elementary school:

  • Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)
  • Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)
  • Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)

Click here to learn more about Elementary School AAP levels of service. Screening for school-based Level II and III AAP services can happen at any time during the school year, but it is done schoolwide in the spring to determine services for the next school year. Parents or guardians may initiate screening for Level II and Level III services by submitting the AAP School-Based Services (Level II-III) Referral Form. Click here for the form. Please email completed forms to Payal Herendeen, AART at ppherendeen@fcps.edu prior to the start of our screening meetings by April 2, 2021. Multiple criteria are used to screen students for all levels. Families who submit a referral will be notified by June 4, 2021 with their student’s eligibility status for Level II-III services starting in the 2021-22 school year. If you have any questions please contact Payal Herendeen, ppherendeen@fcps.edu.

Employment Opportunity: Work for FCPS!

New employment opportunity in Fairfax County Public Schools

FCPS schools and centers will be hiring classroom monitors to provide in-person classroom assistance for students when a staff member remains virtual.  If you would like more information about the position, please review the job description and qualifications online and apply if interested. Please feel free to share information about this opportunity with anyone else you think may be interested.

FCPS is seeking individuals to serve as substitute teachers!

Are you or somebody you know interested in substitute teaching with FCPS? Apply here or attend one of our Friday information sessions to learn more! To sign up for a session, visit our substitute information page here. Say Yes 2 FCPS!

Positivity Project: Wildcard Week

PP Logo

This week, teachers are going back and hitting lessons they may have missed or character strengths they feel their students really enjoyed discussing. Over the last six weeks, we have learned about Integrity, Love, Humility, Enthusiasm, Social Intelligence, and Love of Learning. The important thing to remember is that everyone has ALL 24 strengths within them, but some shine through more than others!  How do you SHINE?

“Character, not circumstance makes the person.”

                                         ~Booker T. Washington

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • When you think of character, what comes to mind?
  • Do you think character is just ONE thing, or multiple things?
  • Why do we need to continue educating ourselves about character?

Curbside Library Checkout

With all grades in the building, we are scaling back curbside pickup.  It will now be available on Mondays between 2:30-3:30 only.  Students can still put books on hold and, if they are in-person, I will deliver to the classroom.  If the student is virtual, it will be available for curbside pickup.  Mystery Bags will be available to all students, but only for curbside pickup.  As always, if the curbside pickup time (Mondays between 2:30-3:30) doesn’t work for you, please contact me at nhcole@fcps.edu and we can make arrangements for pickup.

Thank you all for supporting your readers!

Stingers can now go to Destiny Discover, the library catalog, and put books on hold!

Please note that the catalog may give you a pop-up message saying the book is ready – do not believe it!  Only come to the school AFTER you receive an email from us letting you know the items are ready and what time you’ll be able to pick them up. Be sure to mark your calendar because after one week, the books will be returned to the library so other students may enjoy them.

Click here for directions on how to put books on hold.

Need to return books?  You may return library books on Mondays from 2:30-3:30PM. Drop off location will be in the Kiss-n-Ride loop in the back of the school. As always, please contact Mrs. Cole, our librarian, if you have any questions.

It might be great, or maybe not – but trying new things is what education and reading are all about.

(Note: Separate forms for K-2 and Grades 3-6)
