Glasgow Community Gazette - March 21

Glasgow Community:

This weekend we celebrated a friend’s birthday at Six Flags. We had a fantastic time riding the rides and enjoyed having short lines.

Last Tuesday I had the opportunity to attend Civics classes for Lobby Day, an incredible annual event when our students select a social or civic issue to research, and then they present their solutions to an audience. This year our 8th graders presented to a wide variety of visitors including local government leaders, FCPS central office staff and Glasgow staff, on issues ranging from social justice to the environment and more. It was awesome to see our IB values embedded within this opportunity - students did a great job. A huge thank you to our Civics team for empowering our students through this event each year!

As a reminder, Friday is a 2-hour early release for students, which means students will attend 2nd, 8th, and 6th periods. Please see the schedule below. As we head into Spring Break, please take some time to rest and relax, knowing that your students will not have any newly assigned work over Spring Break.

As always, please reach out to me with any questions.

Important Information

Save the Date!  Picture Day is Coming April 6, 7, 8 & 9!  - Glasgow students will have the opportunity to have their picture taken in April!  Students who are attending school in-person will have their picture taken during their Health and PE class on either the Tuesday/Wednesday Cohort or the Thursday/Friday Cohort. Students who are virtual will be able to make an appointment and have their picture taken after school hours on either April 7th or April 8th. Here is the link to the Sign Up Genius. Pictures will be taken in the library.  Directions for procedures for entering the school for the after hours picture days will be sent out at the end of spring break. We WILL NOT be using these pictures in the yearbook, so please do not feel obligated to have your student’s picture taken.  This is an opportunity we wanted to offer to our Glasgow families since some of our students haven’t had their picture taken since October, 2019. Please click on the link regarding Lifetouch’s enhanced cleaning protocols on Picture Day.

FCPS Updated Grading Policy - Recently Dr. Brabrand shared that FCPS will be updating their grading policy In response to family feedback and student check-in results. FCPS will be seeking to lessen the stress and anxiety posed for some students who have been challenged by the virtual learning environment during the past (and ongoing) pandemic year. FCPS will provide three additional grading changes to support middle and high school students. More information on the grading policy changes is available online.

Updated CDC Guidance on Social Distancing in Schools - Updated CDC guidance released on March 19 allows schools to adjust social distancing from six feet to three feet with universal masking in classroom settings. We are very encouraged by the new guidance. FCPS will be reviewing the new guidance with schools, the Fairfax County Health Department, and other stakeholders this coming week, and we will be proposing next steps once we have completed a thorough review. In the meantime, we will continue to follow the CDC’s recommended mitigation strategies to keep students and staff safe in schools.

New Multilingual Podcast Series Offers Message of Hope, Appreciation, and Readiness - We are so excited about FCPS’ new multilingual podcast series! Our Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement hosts the podcasts in English, Spanish, Arabic, and Korean. Families can expect timely and important information related to school news. Listen to the most recent podcast featuring Superintendent Brabrand. His message of hope, appreciation, and readiness is truly inspiring.

Family Life Education - The Health and PE Department will be teaching Family Life Education (FLE) in the coming months. 6th grade students will be learning FLE from 3/23/21 to 3/26/21, 7th grade from 4/20/21 to 4/24/21, and 8th grade from 5/11/21 to 5/14/21. If you had intended for your student to not participate in FLE, please complete the opt out form on the FCPS website and return it prior to the start of FLE. Questions can be directed to Amanda Eastman (ageastman@fcps.edu) or Michael Pulver (mapulver@fcps.edu).

3rd Quarter Ends Friday, March 26 & Limited SIS Access - Friday, March 26 is the last day of the 3rd quarter. Grades in SIS StudentVUE and ParentVUE will not be available from Friday Mar 26, 2021 at 4pm until Saturday, Apr 10, 2021 at 6am. Report cards will be mailed home the week of April 12th. If you have questions about your child’s grades, please reach out to their classroom teacher.

Attendance Updates - Starting this week, teachers will begin to use a new attendance code if a student scheduled for In-Person instruction is not present in-person but logged in from home. This new code will trigger an automatic attendance notification. If you are planning to keep your In-Person student home for a reason such as sickness or lack of transportation, please contact the school attendance line to let us know. IMPORTANT: Per new FCPS policy, any student scheduled for in-person instruction who has not yet attended school in-person by March 26th will be automatically switched to virtual instruction for the remainder of the school year.

Enrollment Intent Change Requests - At this time we are only able to approve requests for parents to change their enrollment to Virtual. Unfortunately, due to staffing and social distancing constraints, we are not able to approve any changes for students to be enrolled in-person at this time. If you would like to switch your child to virtual or request your child to be placed on the waitlist for in-person instruction, please complete the following request form in English, Spanish, or Arabic. The deadline for wait-list requests is March 26, 2021. At this time we have over 160 families on the waitlist for in-person instruction and remaining space for students is extremely limited due to staffing and operating capacity.
