Cav Fall (Condensed) Varsity Sports Updates

Varsity Field Hockey

Woodson Cavaliers vs Westfield Bulldogs, 12 Mar 2021

This week’s game sent the Varsity Woodson field hockey team to Westfield.  The Cavaliers were characteristically on the front foot passing and moving, always threatening the Bulldog goal.  At one point hearts stopped as goalie, Caitlin Deer, made a diving save.  The Woodson defense repeatedly provided a solid wall and quick return of the ball to the midfield.  As the game moved into the second quarter, a partnership developed between Zoe Hite and Emmy Rummel that was effective in getting Woodson into several positions that created chances for the Cavaliers.  At half-time, score was level at 0.  In the third quarter, Elia Kim’s pressure on the Westfield defense was relentless.  Attacks on Westfield frequently began with Gwyneth Durosko and Allie Maahs out of the midfield and Elizabeth Stribling from the wing.  Genna Cooke was solid and tough protecting the backline.  A Maahs-Stribling partnership hit its stride in the fourth quarter.  The stand-out moment of the game came in the fourth quarter with the game still scoreless when the referee signaled a stroke (similar to a soccer penalty shot).  Kelley Gross was minding the sticks.  The Westfield shot was sure, but Gross was equal to the challenge; blocking the shot to keep the Bulldogs at bay. It remained that way until the final whistle that signaled an end to regulation time and the beginning of sudden death extra time.  Three minutes in, Durosko inserted to Hite on a corner.  Hite, under pressure, maneuvered for the shot and goal.  Woodson won 1-0!

Varsity Cross Country

Cross Country at Burke Lake

The Girls Cross Country athletes ran tough and strong. Finishing the race were DeCarlo, Roux, Gilligan, Stokes, Eib, Smith, and Caraang.

The Boys Cross Country athletes ran hard as well. Finishers were Dawson, Schools, Hymans, Ramirez, McKernan, Miller, Wolf, Lockwood, Johnson, Cassata, Lee, O’Connor, Sullivan, Greenlee, and Laikin.

Varsity Golf

Co-Ed Golf Team won their first tournament against Lake Braddock and West Springfield last week.

Final scores in team stroke play:

W.T. Woodson 170
Lake Braddock 171
West Springfield 213

W.T. Woodson golfers finished with the following players scores:

Ryan Gaugler - 47
Minchan Kim - 41
Tytan Matthews - 41
Tommy Stribling - 50
Raymond Kim - 43
Leo Lee - 45

Woodson Co-Ed Golf is 2-0 after first week of the season

March 9 Match Results vs. Fairfax High School
