Justice Newsletter - March 14

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

We have successfully transitioned to concurrent learning last week, and all of our in-person students have had the opportunity to come to school for their classes.  This transition has been a tremendous lift for our staff, and we are so thankful for their dedication to making this shift a success.

Our catch-up days will be Thursday, March 25, and Friday, March 26.  Students will report to class for attendance, work on assignments, and get help from their teachers.  Students scheduled to attend in-person will come to Justice on their designated day.

Last Friday, we conducted our first in-person fire drill . Our next fire drill for in-person students will be on Friday, March 19. In-person students will need to exit the building, while virtual students should remain logged into their BBCU class.

FCPS has created an additional attendance code in SIS labeled “SYV” for students participating in classes virtually when expected to attend in-person. Moving forward, if a student is attending a class virtually but was designated to attend in-person on that day, we need to use the code “SYV” in SIS. This will generate an automatic phone call home to parents, letting them know that their student was not attending school for in-person learning.

Thank you to all of our students and families who have made the switch to concurrent learning over the last few weeks. As a community, we have supported one another through this pandemic.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or any member of our admin team.

Third-Quarter Catch-Up Days

As we continue to find ways to support students in managing their workload, Dr. Brabrand asked schools to identify quarterly Catch-Up Days that would allow students time to complete assignments they might be missing or need to complete. The Catch-Up Days for the third quarter will be March 25 and 26.  Students will follow their schedule and log into Blackboard Collaborate or attend in-person classes. Teachers will take attendance and remind students about any work they need to complete; no new lessons or additional assignments will occur on these days.

Class of 2021 Talent Competition

The Fairfax County Senior Talent Show is here! Seniors may submit a video of their best talent and be entered into the school level competition (this is a special event for our seniors!).

The senior class will vote on their favorite to represent Justice High School during Advisory on 3/19!  The winner of the Justice High School competition will go on to compete with all of the other high school winners in FCPS via Instagram.  The most-voted (liked on Instagram) talent submission across FCPS will win a senior class pizza party.

Videos must be 5 minutes or less and must contain school appropriate language and clothing. Group acts are permitted, but at least one member must be a senior and all students must attend Justice. Videos will be screened by admin prior to school-wide voting.

Submissions are due by March 17.  Seniors must use this Google Form to submit their video of their talent.  Questions?  Please reach out to our Class of 2021 sponsors Ms. Parkins atparkins@fcps.edu or Ms. McIntosh smcintosh@fcps.edu.

Personal Laptops

As students begin to return to the building, we've seen an increase in the number of personal laptops.  While students are allowed to use personal laptops, they don't connect to the school's network as well as the FCPS issued laptops.  If your student has a school laptop at home, please encourage them to bring that laptop to school. If they don't have a school laptop and would like to use one, one can be requested in the main office.  If you have any questions, please email Jason Kagarise.

Parking Passes

We still have free parking passes available for in-person juniors and seniors. Electronic versions will be posted on Google Classroom, and hard copies will be available outside C50, our Security Office. Students should turn their applications into Mr. Ivery, Safety and Security Specialist, in room C50 (next to the elevator) by Friday, March 26. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Ivery at lkivery@fcps.edu.

Student Recognition

Congratulations to Henry Smith. He wrote an article on his first-day return to in-person experience that was published by The Washington Post. Here is a link to the article.

Opportunity to Apply for Student Representative to the School Board

Each year, in accordance with FCPS Policy 1802, FCPS students have the opportunity to apply for the position of the student representative to the School Board.  The student representative is not a member of the School Board but serves in a nonvoting, advisory capacity, representing the interests of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools.  Students who are currently in grades 9, 10, and 11 are eligible to apply and they do not need to be current members of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SAC).  Applications are due April 7, 2021.  The application and related details can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/blog/application-2021-student-representative-school-board.  Please publicize this opportunity to your students.
