• All students should report their Monday attendance Google Form on their grade-level Google Classroom.

• Independent work day for all 7th and 8th grade LJMS students. NO ATTENDANCE REQUIRED
• Thomas Jefferson High School applications are due (Fri. 2/26)

• Students with last name beginning with A-K will attend on Tuesday/Wednesday
• Students with last name beginning with L-Z will attend Thursday/Friday

Message from Principal Magliola

Dear LJMS Students and Families,

We are ready to welcome back our 8th grade Tigers next Tuesday as we have been looking forward to having our students return to school. If you were able to join our Town Hall meeting last week you were able to hear about our concurrent learning model and how we will follow the CDC's 5 Mitigation strategies in our building. If you were not able to join, please visit our Return to School page on our LJMS website for the presentation tomorrow afternoon. You can also listen to a recording of the presentation here. We will have a Spanish translated version on the site by the end of the day on 2/22. 

The new bell schedule above started on Tuesday, February 16th for all students (virtual and in-person) and will be in effect through this Friday, February 26th.  A similar schedule with rotating lunches will begin on Tuesday, March 2nd, and I will share that in next week's newsletter. Lunches will be assigned this week and will be communicated to teachers and students. 

On the first two days that each grade level returns, we will hold our Orientation for students during an extended 1st and 2nd period to give our new students an orientation to the school and to go over expectations. Teachers will be receiving the specific bell schedule this week and we will then share it with the community next weekend. If your student will be attending in-person, please watch this community video together as we continue to work together to stop the spread of COVID-19.

We will continue to send reminders to families to complete and submit forms that are required for school.  Please let us know if you need any assistance with that process. On February 23rd, we will welcome back the majority of our staff to the building as part of the preparation for students returning!  As part of that process, Thursday, February 25th and Friday, 26th will be Asynchronous Catchup days for all students (in-person and virtual).  

What can students do to prepare for in-person learning?

• Practice wearing their masks for long periods of time to get used to wearing it throughout the day (from the time they get on the bus in the morning to the time they get off the bus in the afternoon).
• Practice going through the health questionnaire each morning to ensure they do not have any symptoms before going to school.
• Have a clear idea of what 6 feet of physical distancing looks like so that they can be prepared to help us maintain that at bus stops, in the hallways, and in classrooms and common areas. 
• Continue to wash hands frequently throughout the day. 

What supplies will students need each day?

• Fully charged laptop
• Laptop charger
• Headphones
• Extra mask 
• Pen/pencil
• Small notebook/binder
• Water bottle to be refilled throughout the day (since water fountains will only be available as refill stations, not for drinking) We can provide water bottles to students that do not have one of their own. 

Lockers will NOT be available, so it is important that students keep it simple and only keep what they need in their backpacks.  Some students may choose to carry their own supply of disinfectant wipes, gloves, or hand sanitizer.  Breakfast and lunch are free for all students for the remainder of this school year, but students may bring lunch to school if desired. For Health & PE class, students should wear PE clothes on the days that they have PE class since locker rooms will not be available.  

Classroom Monitors

For classes where the teacher is teaching virtually from home, students will be supervised by classroom monitors. They will be in a classroom with other students and the teacher will lead instruction as they have been since the beginning of the year; the monitor is only present for supervision, safety, and support. 

We remain committed to maintaining one strong and connected LJMS as we resume in-person instruction and while many of our policies and procedures have been updated, we are still here to support you in any way we can!

Estamos más que emocionados de dar la bienvenida a nuestros Tigres de octavo grado el próximo martes, ya que hemos estado esperando que los estudiantes regresen a la escuela. Si pudo unirse a nuestra reunión del Ayuntamiento la semana pasada, pudo escuchar sobre nuestro modelo de aprendizaje concurrente y cómo seguiremos las 5 estrategias de mitigación de los CDC en nuestro edificio. El nuevo horario de timbre anterior comenzó el martes 16 de febrero para todos los estudiantes (virtual y en persona) y estará vigente hasta el viernes 26 de febrero. Hi Everyone! We had a great LJ Town Hall this week. Thank you to our administration for providing a great presentation and to Mr. Magliola for staying on for our PTA meeting and for fielding questions. Help Stock the LJMS Food Pantry!

Here are two great ways to help keep the LJMS food pantry stocked with supplies that go directly to our enrolled students and their families:

1- Become a Red Bag donor with Food For Neighbors. Donations collected from these food drives account for roughly half of our pantry supplies. Go to www.foodforneighbors.org to sign up for your red bag. The next event is March 6th!

2- Put us on your shopping list! Community members can sign up at http://bit.ly/LJMSPantryPartner to choose an item from a list of our most needed items. Simply add the item to your cart during your weekly shopping trip and drop it off at the school - or set up recurring donations through our Amazon wish list.

World Language Credit Exam

Does your child speak, write, and understand another language?  If so, they could take the world language examination, which is offered in up to 30 languages and potentially receive HS credit(s).  If you are interested and would like more information including how to register for the exam, please contact your student’s school counselor.  Registration for the exam is now open and closes February 26^th.

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings

As additional student groups return to school in person, parents and caregivers are asked to complete a Health Screening Commitment form before student(s) return to school buildings. This document confirms that a parent, caregiver, or guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep their students home should they become ill. When you log onto ParentVUE, the option to complete the Health Screener should pop up automatically. Electronic completion of the form through ParentVUE is preferred, but we are able to send hard copies home. Please direct all questions and completed forms to Monica Iskander, mxiskander@fcps.edu

Tech Support

FCPS has launched a toll-free parent Technology Help Desk to assist families with technology issues. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered 7 a.m.-11 p.m., seven days a week. Parents who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS has Parent Information Phone Lines available in eight languages to assist with general questions about FCPS.) We have also created an online portal for older students and parents/guardians to request technology help.
