NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Good afternoon Woodson families:

I hope everyone is safe during the snow/ice event this week. My dog has sheepdog in her and she wanted to be outside all day. I disagreed.

We have posted the information regarding the return to in person learning on our website. Please feel free to review and send me questions. With teachers returning to the building this week, we will transition to Mondays as independent learning days. Many teachers will continue to offer opportunities for students to meet with them, including Mondays, third period and after school. These times will depend on their availability and responsibilities. Please continue to email teachers, counselors and administrators with questions.

Looking forward to some warmer weather and the beginning of Spring! What do they say about spring... the time of year when all things are new and grow? Sounds about right...

Stay safe, stay connected and stay warm, Cavs!

Dr. Floyd

2. Asynchronous Learning Days - Thu/Fri, Feb 25th/26th

Please note Thursday, February 25th &  Friday, February 26th will be asynchronous days for all students.

FCPS has required all teachers to engage in training as they prepare to implement the concurrent instruction model. All students should access asynchronous assignments for each class period during these two school days.

3. 2021 Student Peace Award

Woodson senior Johari Iraan Hemphill has been named a recipient of the 2021 Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County.  Students from 24 Fairfax County public schools have been named recipients of the awards designed to recognize young people who work as peacemakers. Recipients will be recognized at a virtual reception in March.

The Student Peace Awards of Fairfax County were begun in 2006 to encourage people to think more about peace as both a means and an end, and to recognize young people who work as peacemakers. Every year, the high schools in Fairfax County are asked to select one junior or senior, or a group of students, whose work has promoted peace. The project is organized by volunteers and funded by donations from 17 secular and religious sponsoring organizations.

Johari Iraan Hemphill - In response to last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, Hemphill organized and led a Runathon, that raised money by obtaining pledges for each mile run. Despite the difficulties of virtual gatherings, $3,000 was raised and donated to the NAACP’s Legal Defense and Educational Fund. The success of the Runathon encouraged Hemphill and his fellow leaders to pledge service hours to continue the effort during this school year. They are currently creating resource pages to educate and promote empathy, advocacy, and peace.

4. Grade Level Town Hall Meetings

We are looking forward to welcoming students into the building starting March 2nd with our 9th and 12th graders followed by our 10th and 11th grade students on March 9th.

In preparation for our students' return, we will be holding grade level town hall meetings for each class on Thursday, February 25th at 10:00am.

Students will receive an email that contains a link to join the town hall for their class. The email will be sent from BBCU to their FCPSSchools account. We will also send reminders to students through Naviance.

5. Class of 2022 Palentine Drive Thru

The Class of 2022 Council will be hosting a Palentine Drive Thru for Juniors this coming Monday, February 22nd from 3pm-4pm outside the front of the school.

Students will be able to pick up candy, take pictures with their friends, and write encouraging notes which will be part of a mural!

This event is a great way for Juniors to meet & bond with their peers, as it has been difficult during these unprecedented times. Join us for some meaningful fun- and don’t miss out on our raffle! *Covid-19 safety precautions will be in place.

Students will receive a SignUpGenius link to sign up for the event through their fcpsschools.net email account.

6. PSAT for 10th Graders on April 19th

On Monday, April 19th, Woodson High School tenth graders will have the opportunity to take the PSAT 10.

FCPS will cover the cost for any tenth grade student to take this test.

General information about the PSAT 10 test format is available on the College Board webpage (https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10).

Monday, April 19th has been designated for independent learning in FCPS high schools, so students who choose to take the PSAT 10 will not miss synchronous instruction or intervention with their teachers.

A form to register your student will be sent on or before March 1st.

We will share more details about test day schedules and bus transportation in the coming weeks.

FCPS health and safety protocols for PSAT 10 administration are available online (https://www.fcps.edu/node/41891).

7. Google Chrome Sync

As part of FCPS’s ongoing effort to support student use of technology, Chrome Sync and the ability to save passwords will be available as an option starting on February 18th.  Students are not required to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, but may choose to do so in order to:

  • reduce their log-in time.
  • access bookmarks and extensions across devices.

Chrome will remember and offer saved passwords when students are logging into different instructional applications. Chrome will also make bookmarks and extensions available on any device in which the student logs into Chrome and turns on Sync.

If your student would like to use Chrome Sync and save passwords, support resources are available on the FCPS website.  If your child is logging into Chrome now, they may need to log out of Chrome and log back in to see the new features.

It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)
