Franklin MS Weekly Update - February 12

Franklin Families and Students,

Good afternoon. I hope that you have had a great week. It has been a busy one at Franklin and I am fortunate that I had many opportunities to connect with our families, staff, and students. We had a Student Supply Distribution event, two Return to School listening sessions, a Spanish-language Town Hall, and we just finished our second week of welcoming students to our building for targeted interventions. Each opportunity was a reminder that our school resides within a community full of supportive families, dedicated educators, and amazing students.

Looking ahead to next week, we will continue to offer opportunities for the Franklin school family to connect. This newsletter contains detailed information below, but I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight a few of them:

  • Our new bell schedule and lunch schedule will begin on February 16.
  • We will host a Return to School Family Information Session on Tuesday, February 16 at 6:00 PM. This will be a formal presentation that will focus on the safety measures, procedures, logistics, and instructional models that will be in place as our students return to the building for in-person instruction in March.
  • Our students will attend a school-wide Virtual Assembly during one of their Falcon Time periods next week.
  • We need your help to complete a Health Screening Commitment Form for all students who are returning for in-person instruction. This can be submitted in ParentVue and the links and instruction can be found below.

We hope that the upcoming holiday weekend provides an opportunity for you to rest, relax, and recharge. Please know that we are grateful for everything that you are doing to support your student.

Sincerely,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings

Parents or guardians who chose in-person learning for their child are required to complete a Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment form as students are phased back into in-person learning. This document indicates the parent or guardian’s agreement and commitment to completing a daily health screening prior to sending the student to school and also to keep ill students at home. The commitment form is available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Additional information is available at https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/student-health-and-safety-guidance-document.

The Health Screening Commitment form can be submitted electronically through ParentVUE (PVUE) beginning January 4, or via hard copy. Please contact Kristine Smith if you need a hard copy sent to you.

Presidents’ Day Holiday on Monday, February 15

As a reminder, all schools and offices will be closed on Monday, February 15, for the Presidents' Day Holiday. Students are not expected to complete asynchronous assignments that day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 16th. See the complete 2020-21 school year calendar.

Black History Month at Franklin MS

Students at Franklin have been learning about African American role models, both past and present. They discussed how the life stories of modern role models such as Kamala Harris and Amanda Gorman exemplified perseverance. Additionally, as part of their unit on World War I, 7th grade history students learned about the contributions of the Harlem Hellfighters, an all-black Infantry unit. This group served as a segregated unit under French command in Europe and spent a total of 191 days at the front lines, more than any other American unit. Private Henry Johnson even earned the French Croix de Guerre for his bravery in fighting off around 30 German soldiers to protect his unit. The students will be moving on to learn about the amazing cultural contributions made by African Americans in the Harlem Renaissance. In 8th grade civics, students discussed the work of the Freedom Riders, a group of student activists who rode buses across the country in their efforts to promote civil rights.
