Return to In-Person Learning Timeline

We are excited to welcome back students to Oak Hill next Tuesday, February 16th.   Oak Hill's revised bell schedule will also start on February 16th and will be from 9:00am to 3:30pm.  All of the return to school dates are listed below.

Preschool & PAC students February 16
Kindergarten February 23
Grades 1 & 2 March 9
Grades 3-6 March 16

In preparation for students’ return, schools created staffing plans based on the
number of students who selected in-person instruction earlier this school year. Students who have already selected to return to in-person instruction will be able to do so for two days a week. Due to social distancing requirements, schools may not be able to accommodate additional students who wish to change their selection from virtual to in-person instruction.

Calendar Reminder

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings

As many students return to in-person instruction, parents and caregivers will be asked to acknowledge a Health Screening Commitment form before their student(s) re-enter school buildings. This document confirms that a parent, caregiver, or guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep their students home when they are ill.

The Health Commitment form can be submitted electronically through ParentVUE (PVUE) or via hard copy. Please contact Katherine Dillard at kjdillard1@fcps.edu if you need a hard copy sent to you.

Black History Month

b

We are continuing to celebrate Black History Month at Oak Hill.  This past Monday our staff met to collaborate and share ideas on how we are all highlighting Black History Month.  We will be sharing our "artifacts" with students on WOAK (Oak Hill's news show) and with families in Wolf News and through weekly teacher emails.  Below is our second interesting fact about Black History Month.

Fact #2

There was a time when in our history where black students were not allowed to share a classroom with white students. Clara B Williams was born in 1885 and this was true for her.  When Mrs. Williams was a student at New Mexico State University and her professors would not allow her inside the classroom, she took notes while standing in the hallways! She successfully graduated but Mrs Williams was not allowed to walk with her class to accept her diploma. She was the first African American to graduate from the school.  Mrs. Williams became a great teacher and taught black students during the day and then taught their parents (who were former slaves) at night.  Mrs Williams and her husband, who raised 3 sons that became doctors, lived to be 108 years old. After her death, New Mexico State University renamed the English Department after her.

Kindergarten Survey

k

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2021, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2021, please complete this form and return it today. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Oak Hill families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2021-2022 school year.  Please email the completed form to Katherine Dillard at KJDillard1@fcps.edu.

Reading Tip of the Week

r

While a foundation of phonics and sight words is essential when learning to read, it is equally important that children learn how to comprehend texts. One way parents can support their children with comprehension is through read alouds. Read alouds provide scaffolds for children by opening the door for rich discussions on characters, theme, and plot. Parents can foster comprehension through discussions, questions, and reflections.  To learn more about how you can help your children make meaning of texts, click here.
