1.  From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the Chantilly Community:

I hope you had a good week. I hope that you saw my message yesterday about what to expect in regards to in-person learning. I really want students to be back at CHS and believe that many—including my daughter and son—will really benefit from being back in school. At the same time, I want to be honest and pro-active about the road ahead. Educating young people during the pandemic has, among many other lessons, highlighted the importance of teacher-student relationships. I read the article below about a developmental framework that adults can use to better connect with young people. I hope you find it helpful.

Have a good holiday weekend,

Scott Poole

Principal

A Framework for Relationships with Young People

The Minneapolis-based Search Institute created the Developmental Relationships Framework aimed at fostering “close connections through which young people discover who they are, cultivate abilities to shape their own lives, and learn how to engage with and contribute to the world around them.” The Framework has five elements, each with specific actions that make relationships powerful (quoted directly):

  • Express care: Show me that I matter to you:
  • Be someone I can trust.
  • Really pay attention when we are together.
  • Make me feel known and valued.
  • Show me you enjoy being with me.
  • Praise me for my efforts and achievements.
  • Challenge growth: Push me to keep getting better:
  • Expect me to live up to my potential.
  • Push me to go further.
  • Insist I take responsibility for my actions.
  • Help me learn from mistakes and setbacks.
  • Provide support: Help me complete tasks and achieve goals:
  • Guide me through hard situations and systems.
  • Build my confidence and take charge of my life.
  • Stand up for me when I need it.
  • Put limits in place that keep me on track.
  • Share power: Treat me with respect and give me a say:
  • Take me seriously and treat me fairly.
  • Involve me in decisions that affect me.
  • Work with me to solve problems and reach goals.
  • Create opportunities for me to take action and lead.
  • Expand possibilities: Connect me with people and places that broaden my world:
  • Inspire me to see possibilities for my future.
  • Expose me to new ideas, experiences, and places.
  • Introduce me to people who can help me grow.

The Framework linked below has a checklist of specific actions that can be helpful during the pandemic.

7.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week (virtually) to congratulate them.

  • Christian Callaghan has done very well in Biology this year! He's a great member of our class and actively participates in activities. His hard work and knowledge of science have made him successful this year and I'm excited to see how he continues to develop his curiosity as he grows as a scientist. Ms. Nicole Abba
  • I have seen Audrey Coreas Chavez really advance in World 2 as the year has progressed. She reaches out for help when needed and engages in class. Ms. Mary Catherine Keating
  • Austin Green has really taken it up a notch! He is actively engaging and participating in class, not only letting me see his personal understanding but giving me insight into what he and his classmates are learning from our virtual activities. I especially appreciate it when he turns on his microphone to share his ideas– it sets a great example for his classmates. Keep up the good work, Austin! Ms. Angie Rollet
  • David Jauregui Dominguez has been doing very well in US History! Keep it up, David. Mr. Michael Kirk
  • Junghoon Seo has been working very hard lately and it hasn't gone unnoticed by Ms. Hayden and me. Mr. Michael Kirk
  • Paul Truong has been doing a terrific job of participating, being extra responsive, and offering meaningful contributions! Great work, Paul. Keep it up! Ms. Toni Bowman
