Justice Newsletter - February 7

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

Thank you for joining us during last week's curriculum fair. If you did not have a chance to join us, our Curriculum Fair Google Site is still available. The site has information on course selection, IB Diploma Programme, and courses. There are videos from teachers and students, as well as examples of projects and assignments. This google site will be live through the summer. Please remember that students will need to be logged into their FCPS Google email to access the site. Parents, please ask your student(s) to log in, which would allow you to visit the site.

https://sites.google.com/fcpsschools.net/jhs-curriculum-fair-21-22/home

Please join us on Wednesday, February 10, from 3:15 pm – 4:00 pm to celebrate the All-A Honor Roll recipients from 1st and 2nd quarter. This live-streaming ceremony will include Justice's own Mr. Djelil Bemmerzouk, who teaches French Language, and will be featured as our Guest Speaker as well as a pre-recorded performance from Justice's Choir with a special thank you to Ms. Lansberry. Justice's students have worked especially hard this school year, and we celebrate in their achievement! Both parents, students, and staff can watch the live stream via BBCU.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or any member of our admin team.

New Bell Schedule to begin February 16th

We will implement the below-revised bell schedule beginning on February 16th through February 26th. The schedule maximizes instructional time while providing one lunch period.

Once students return on March 2nd, we will implement a new bell schedule with multiple lunch periods to accommodate social distancing and mitigation strategies in our cafeteria. This bell schedule will be shared with our community later this month. Currently, our administrative team is finalizing some of the details for the in-person return to learning.

Just a reminder that FCPS has designated February 24 and 25 as asynchronous days for students as teachers work in the building to prepare for students’ return.

Revised Bell Schedule

Virtual or In-Person

Want To "See" Your School Counselor?

Justice High School's Student Services recognizes that the virtual world has made it harder for students to get in touch with their School Counselor. Please note that if the request is made after school hours, you will be contacted the next school day.

School Counselors and Ms. Grande, our College & Career Specialist, are also available during Office Hours every Wednesdays from 11:15 am-11:45 am. Students are still able to send an email directly to the school counselor or notify their teacher.

How to help adolescents cope with increased social isolation during the COVID-19 Pandemic:

During this Pandemic, most students have experienced much less interaction with their peers than they usually do. The interactions adolescents have with their peers are an important aspect of human development. These peer connections provide support, mitigate feelings of loneliness, encourage identity development, and help create their sense of belonging. During this time, it is important that we are mindful of ways we can assist teens struggling with social isolation:

Encourage creative ways to connect with others:
-  A safe and socially distant scavenger hunt walk in the neighborhood
-  Create arts and crafts together with friends. Choose a project and supplies in advance to make sure you all have the same craft as friends over video chat.
-  Set up calls or video chats to allow your child to spend time with extended family and other people important to them. You might ask a relative to read a story to your child over the phone or on a video chat.
-  Older teens may be more open to playing video games online with friends or texting as a way to connect with peers.

Seek Daily Purpose:
-  Helping teens spend time doing activities they care about/value can give their day meaning
-  This sense of meaning can be found in activities such as biking, creating music, making movies, baking, reading, drawing, writing, building something, gardening or planting, etc.
-  Some teens may enjoy helping others so consider encouraging them to find ways to connect and help their community like picking up litter around the neighborhood, finding a safe way to volunteer, or making crafts for a local senior facility.

Talk about the isolation/loss:
-  It’s important to be mindful that, during this time, many adolescents have missed out on important social events like birthday parties, prom, and sports among many others.
-  We must acknowledge their loss, ask how they’re feeling, and validate them by showing them that we care and understand.
-  Allow the teen/adolescent to lead the discussion rather than making assumptions about what/how they might be feeling or thinking.
-  Having your teen/adolescent write down what they miss about specific people, places, or events as a way to cope may be beneficial for those who may not feel completely comfortable to say or share it out loud.
