A Message from Ms. Jankovich

Dear Sangster Families,

February is Black History Month – a time to celebrate the many contributions  by Black Americans and a time to recognize the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. We celebrate Black History Month in February, as it is the birth month of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two figures instrumental in the abolition of slavery. Throughout the month your child’s teacher will be sharing lessons and information, aligned with the FCPS Social Studies Department, as a way for our students to continue to learn about our diverse history as a nation.

As you know, we are moving forward with our Return-to-Learn plans, beginning with the return of Kindergarten students on Tuesday, February 23. Please see the chart below to know when your child will be returning to the building for in-person instruction, two days a week. Our new bell schedule of 9:45AM – 4:15PM will begin February 16th for all students and will continue for both in-person and all virtual students the remainder of the school year.

In preparation of brining students back into the building, I will be hosting three, grade-level specific Parent Information Nights where I will talk about the safety measures that will be in place for in-person students, as well as arrival and dismissal, lunch and recess, and classroom procedures. While anyone can listen to these sessions, I would ask that if you are the parent of an all-virtual student, you do not attend the session itself, and wait for the recorded link to come out. Our BBCU sessions do have a limit of participants and we want to make sure the parents of in-person students are able to attend.

Again, the sessions will be recorded and posted to the Sangster website if you are not able to attend. Please open all session in Chrome

Alternative to Picture Day -  Submit photo of your student

If you DO NOT plan to send your child to Sangster ES to have their picture taken but want their photo in the Yearbook as part of their class picture, first create a Shutterfly account (if you haven’t already). Then access this link where you will be directed to a Google Sign Up form to share what email is associated with your Shutterfly account. From there, Ms. Mishael, our Yearbook Chair, can grant you access to share your child’s headshot (or close-up picture) on our Sangster Shutterfly Share Site. Please include your child’s first and last name, grade level, homeroom teacher, and Picture Day Portrait.

Safety Protocols on Picture Day

Lifetouch has developed COVID procedures for Picture Day: MyLifetouch.com COVID Procedures

Sangster safety protocols for Virtual School Picture Days are as follows:

  • All parents must adhere to the time they selected to have their child's picture taken.
  • Students should be dropped off in the bus loop, near the main doors of the school, 5-10 minutes prior to their scheduled time. Once dropped off, parents should then drive around to the Kiss-n-Ride lane (near the playground area) where their child will meet them.
  • All students must wear a face covering.  Masks will be removed when they have their picture taken, but social distancing will be in place.
  • Sangster staff will be present throughout the day to help students exit/enter their cars, while waiting in line to have their picture taken, and in the gym, alongside the Lifetouch staff.
  • If your child is not feeling well on Picture Day or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please keep them home.

Meal Distribution Update: Many Grab and Go Sites Have Switched to Weekly Meal Kits

Many of the FCPS Grab and Go food distribution sites have switched from daily food pickup to weekly Fairfax Meal Kit distribution. Fairfax Meal Kits contain seven days of breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and supper (at certain sites) items packed in bulk. The meal kits will be available for pick up every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until supplies are exhausted. Bus route pickups remain unchanged.

Go to the Food Distribution website to see if your meal site is changing.

During January and February, these sites will also be distributing fresh, local fruits and vegetables. Families that pick up no-cost meals will also be provided a fresh fruit or vegetable sourced from a local farm for each child, along with an activity sheet and recipe for that item. The item will vary each week, and will be available on the following dates:

  • February 10, 17

As a reminder, it is important to follow social distancing guidelines. Be sure to stand a minimum of 6 feet apart from others and practice regular hand washing, including prior to leaving a residence to pick-up meals, upon returning home, and before consuming food. Please wear a mask when picking up the meal kits.

Positivity Project

Week of January 31

Integrity

This week’s character strength is Integrity. Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).
