1.  From the Principal's Desk

Dear Members of the Chantilly HS Community;

First, please join me in celebrating Black History Month.  Chantilly HS is celebrating Black History Month throughout the month of February with events such as the HBCU College Panel, Northrop Grumman Guest Panel discussion, CHS Equity Team Meeting: Guest Speaker & FCPS author and the BSA Silent Student March.  Please contact Dr. Hogan for information on these events khogan1@fcps.edu. Additionally, there is the HBCU College Fair information available through the Chantilly Career Center or contact Ms. Greiner klgreiner@fcps.edu

We also recognize our outstanding Student Services team as part of National School Counseling Week. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. We appreciate all that our school counseling team does for the Chantilly community.

Finally, I’m very pleased to share that the School Board has approved Superintendent Brabrand’s plan for the reopening of schools. I’m enthusiastic about having students back at CHS, and we are proceeding “full-speed ahead” with our plans. After so many months of uncertainty, it’s great to have concrete goals and dates. We will be providing the students and parents with lots of strategic information about the reopening of schools in the weeks ahead, including how to access parent and student town halls aimed at providing everyone a chance to ask questions.

Have a great weekend,

Scott Poole

2.  Virtual HBCU College Fair

The Alfred Street Baptist Church and The ASBC Foundation will present the largest virtual HBCU college fair in the nation on Saturday, February 20, 2021, from 8:00 AM-3:30 PM.  More than 70 colleges and universities will be present, and many will conduct on-site interviews, offer admission, and may waive application fees.

The virtual platform's total capacity is 10,000 and includes representatives from all colleges and universities, students, and Festival staff, which requests only students register for the event.   The link to the ASBC HBCU Festival is https://www.alfredstreet.org/hbcu-fest/.  The cost for students is $5.00.

3. Credit Exam for World Languages

The 2021 Credit Exam for World Languages will take place in March 2021.  Students have the opportunity to earn up to three (3) credits, based on demonstrated proficiency on the exam. To register, students should email their school counselor directly no later than Monday, February 25. Late registrations will not be accepted. Details on the Spring testing window, including which languages are tested, are posted online here: Credit Exam for WL

4. Student Intern Opportunity

SAT Aces is a student-led initiative backed by the FCPS Student Equity Ambassador Leaders program aimed at connecting lower income students to SAT preparation resources. The predominant goal of this project is to develop a website that compiles SAT prep resources in a single, accessible location. As a part of the initiative, interns will be tasked with constructing the site, and later raising awareness for it. This project will mainly deal with web development and social media marketing, however all skillsets are welcomed. Interning for this project is an excellent opportunity for students to gain service hours and contribute to scholastic equity in the county. Girls Varsity Basketball (12-1, 6-1) finished the regular season as Co-District Champions! Congratulations to Coach Regan and the team.  They beat Oakton last night 42-14 to finish the regular season.  The Girls will go into the Regional Tournament as a #2 seed due to a coin flip and will play at HOME on Monday vs. Washington-Liberty at 7:00.

Boys Varsity Basketball (2-12, 1-7) completed the regular season with a loss to Westfield 49-61.  They will play in the Regional Tournament on Monday at Yorktown with a 7:00 start.

COVID has brought change to all sorts of events this year, however science and inquiry persevere. The annual Chantilly Science Fair occurred on February 3rd, albeit virtually, the students still presented their data to judges and demonstrated their learning throughout the process. Congratulations to all students that participated.

7.  Recent Student Successes

This is the next installment for the school year of what has become a weekly segment aimed at recognizing students for demonstrating recent improvement or achievement in academics, behavior or citizenship. At the end of each recognition, you will see the name of the nominating teacher or staff member. On a rotating basis, departments will nominate students.  I meet with recognized students each week (virtually) to congratulate them.

  • I'm inspired by Shreya Chandra's desire to learn and master the material. She took a lot of initiative on the recent lab we were doing and helped me troubleshoot to figure out where I made mistakes when writing the lab. I really appreciated her patience. Mr. Corey Porter
  • Amanda Diaz Jimenez is a motivated student who has adapted very well to distance learning in Environmental Science. She asks questions and is willing to help other students. She offers to help students who are struggling, and she is seen as a leader by her peers. Ms. Anne Crismon
  • Summer Dvorak does an amazing job of being present in class and actively participating. She has great determination and a great work ethic, as she is dedicated to achieving the best grades she can in all her classes. I enjoy working with her daily. Ms. Kristina Plaugher
  • Judy Ho is such a joy to have in class. She is always smiling and happy and willing to participate online, demonstrates cool things she is doing at home, and her love of school is contagious. She completes all of her classwork and homework and goes above and beyond with each assignment. Thank you, Judy! Ms. Katy Smallwood
  • Jessica Lopez-Jovel is an absolute joy to have in class. She actively participates and does her best in every class. I'm so proud of you, Jessica!! Ms. Leslie Wallace
  • Sydney Schneider is a burst of positive energy in every class. She is a joy to work with and it is amazing to watch her continue to grow as a performer and a person! Mr. Andy Shaw
  • Despite not taking physics previously, Kunsh Singh achieved one of the highest grades on our recent test in AP Physics C. His hard work, diligence, and dedication to his studies are not unnoticed! Ms. Whitney Faries
  • Haby Thiam has been a joy to work with since Day 1. Her digital portfolio is a well-crafted combination of visual artwork and verbal reflections, often full of anecdotal commentary that allows you to follow her creative process. She is honest, witty, and willing to persevere through challenges. Ms. Colleen Dollinger
  • Christine Tsai is the role model for getting it done! She consistently is on task, highly knowledgeable and on point in AP Biology. She participates in class and is always ready to learn. Ms. Karen Molloy
  • Nilufer Yavuz is an outstanding student. She takes her academics very seriously and is a great self-advocate. Nilufer asks great questions and really seems to enjoy learning about the ocean. Keep up the great work! Ms. Michele Gates
