Wolf News February 4

s

Oak Hill students had a great time celebrating our January Spirit Days.

Principal's Message

p

Dear Families,

Snow! How exciting it was to see several inches of snow fall this week. I forgot how thin my blood has gotten since moving away from my roots in Pennsylvania. Brrrr, it was cold out there! I hope the kids were able to burn some energy and get their creative juices flowing with building forts or castles out of snow.

How excited I am to tell you that we will be welcoming students back inside Oak Hill in a few short weeks! Please see the full schedule below and also note our bell schedule change that will take place on February 16th. We have had to adjust the instructional schedules at each grade level and your child’s classroom teacher will share that information directly with you. We know that many of you feel more comfortable continuing virtually and we are happy to accommodate this learning preference style. In the coming weeks we will have opportunities to share information with parents and students so that everyone feels comfortable with the new changes. Should you have questions before then, I am happy to answer them!  Please contact me at hedevore@fcps.edu.

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Return to School Parent Town Hall Meeting

s

With students returning to Oak Hill soon, we will be hosting a Return to School Parent Town Hall Meeting next Thursday, February 11th at 4pm.  This meeting will focus on the primary grades (Kindergarten through 2nd) returning to the school building.  We will send the link to the meeting next week.

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings

As additional student groups return to school in person, parents and caregivers are asked to complete a Health Screening Commitment form before student(s) return to school buildings. This document confirms that a parent, caregiver, or guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep their students home should they become ill.

The Health Commitment form can be submitted electronically through in ParentVUE (PVUE) beginning January 4, or via hard copy. Please contact Katherine Dillard at kjdillard1@fcps.edu if you need a hard copy sent to you.

Black History Month

b

In February, people all over the United States celebrate Black History Month—because Black history is American history.  Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round, and Black History Month is one opportunity to honor these diverse and important stories. Each week in Wolf News in February, we will include an interesting fact about Black History Month.

Fact #1: Buffalo Soldiers were originally members of the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed in 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. This nickname was given to the Black Cavalry by Native American tribes who fought in the Indian Wars. John Morton Finney was a Buffalo Soldier who fought in World War 1. He not only served but he earned 11 degrees and practiced law until he was 106 years old!! He was believed to be the longest practicing attorney in the United States.

Kindergarten Survey

k

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2021, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2021, please complete this form and return it no later than February 10, 2021. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Oak Hill families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2021-2022 school year.  Please email the completed form to Katherine Dillard at KJDillard1@fcps.edu.

Math Tip of the Week

c

One way we can reinforce math skills is through using money.  Here are ways you might use money to build on math skills with both primary and upper grade students.

Put your credit and debit cards aside and introduce your students to real money. For our primary students, have your children sort the coins into separate piles, ask them how much each coin is worth and to help count out spare change. You can use change and bills to create addition, subtraction and multiplication problems. For instance, if it takes four quarters to equal one dollar, how many quarters will equal six dollars? 4 quarters x 6 = 24.

For upper grade students, teach your children how to budget, have them pay for products at the store and count out the change. Make a grocery list and budget a certain amount for groceries. You could bring a calculator to the store and have your children add up the prices as you shop. Teach them about comparison shopping. For example, if one product costs $3.99 and a similar product is on sale for $2.49 how much money will you be saving?  This will give them a head start for when they have to take that financial literacy course in high school!
