FCPS Tabletop Exercise

On Monday Oak Hill's Crisis Team participated in an FCPS Tabletop Exercise with members of FCPS Office of Safety and Security team.  At this meeting we were able to talk through how we would react and lead students and staff through various emergency situations such as Lockdown; Secure the Building; Stay Put, Stay Tuned; and Shelter in Place.  When students return to school, safety drills will be reviewed and practiced.   Fire evacuation drills will be practiced monthly and we will communicate further information about the frequency of other safety drills once students return to school.  We take all practice drills very seriously so that in the case of an emergency, staff and students will be calm and prepared.

At the end of our training, Oak Hill was recognized for our preparedness and knowledge of best practices. Please view this video to learn more about each type of drill and click here to access the FCPS Safety and Security website.

Kindergarten Survey

k

We need your help in projecting the Kindergarten enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year. Virginia Law, section 22.1-254, requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2021, must be enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.

If you have a child who will be five years old on or before September 30, 2021, please complete this form and return it no later than February 10, 2021. If any of your neighbors have children who will be eligible for Kindergarten, please share this information with them, as we are especially interested in reaching those Oak Hill families who do not have children currently attending school.

The information on this survey will help the school plan for adequate facilities and personnel for the 2021-2022 school year.  Please email the completed form to Katherine Dillard at KJDillard1@fcps.edu.

Health Screening Commitment Form Required Prior to Student Return to School Buildings

As additional student groups return to school in person, parents and caregivers are asked to complete a Health Screening Commitment form before student(s) return to school buildings. This document confirms that a parent, caregiver, or guardian will complete a daily health screening and will keep their students home should they become ill.

The Health Commitment form can be submitted electronically through in ParentVUE (PVUE) beginning January 4, or via hard copy. Please contact Katherine Dillard at kjdillard1@fcps.edu if you need a hard copy sent to you.

Boost Your Child’s Skills at Home: Practicing Sequencing

There are certain skills that will help students in all subjects and grade level curriculum.  Sequencing is a strategy that sorts events or concepts in chronological order (in order of what occurred first, next, last).   One easy and personal way to introduce this skill with your child is to have your child draw several pictures of important times in their life, from when they were babies to present.  Next, ask  your child to sequence, or sort, the pictures in order of what happened first, second, third, last, etc.  To extend their learning, have them write a sentence or word under each picture to describe what is happening.  If your child needs help articulating their ideas- ask them to use their pictures to explain to you by communicating through speaking what is happening in each picture.  Older children can write a short recount or narrative of what happened in each picture.  Ask your child to use a graphic organizer to help them sort their pictures and/or the written description of each picture!

Another fun and personally relevant way to practice the skill of sequencing is to explore what your child is able to do independently around the house or at school.  Can they make their bed, feed a pet, make a sandwich, or make a homemade card for a relative?  Ask them to write or draw the steps in order of how they complete these tasks.  Give them the transition words above to help with the skill of sequencing.  For younger students have them sequence numbers from 1-10, sequence story events in one of their favorite fiction stories, or sequence the seasons of the year.  For upper grade students have them sequence events in Virginia History, the life cycle of plants or animals, or the water cycle.  Using the sequencing signal words above and a graphic organizer is a great way to get the ideas flowing!
