Parent Rep Needed, Bus Stop Deliveries and WIDA Testing

Parent Representative Needed!

Graham Road is in need of a parent representative on the Title I Parent Advisory Council (TPAC). The commitment would be to attend monthly virtual meetings in the evening (7:00-8:30 PM) where you are given the opportunity to provide feedback, pose questions, and express ideas to advance partnerships and strengthen services within FCPS Title I school communities. You can learn more about the council here: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33395

If you’re interested, please email lebadini@fcps.edu. Thank you for considering this important representation opportunity!

Special Delivery for 5th Grade Students:

Ms. Sweeney and Ms. Riffe prepared bags of materials to go along with the upcoming science unit for 5th grade students. These materials will allow students to have all materials to interact with lessons taught online. If you miss the bus deliveries, please email Ms. Riffe or Ms. Sweeney to arrange a curbside pick up of your bag.

WIDA Testing

Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) participate annually in an English language proficiency assessment. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs to monitor students' progress in acquiring academic English. The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is administered to all students in grades K-12 with an English language proficiency (ELP) level of 1-5 and 9. The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs is aligned with the WIDA English language development standards and assesses English in the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The assessment will:

  • Determine students’ English language proficiency level and eligibility for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services and testing accommodations.
  • Help students and families understand students’ current level of English language proficiency along a developmental continuum.
  • Provide teachers with information they can use to plan for and support student learning.
  • Determine whether ELs have met English language proficiency criteria and will be designated former ELs.

Testing will look different for us this year, and the following information is very important.

  • Students who chose to stay virtual all year will come to GRES on either February 8 and February 22 OR March 1 and March 8.
  • Testing takes 2 days to complete.
  • Ms. Jackie and Annabel will be reaching out to families beginning this week to confirm testing appointments, go over important arrival and pick-up information, and provide essential information on wearing masks and any illnesses.
  • It is VERY IMPORTANT to be at your testing appointment.  We have lots of children to assess.
  • Students who chose in-person will be assessed during the school day.
