A Message from Ms. Jankovich

Dear Sangster Families,

I hope this email finds you well.

Dr. Brabrand and the FCPS Leadership Team are continuing to draft an updated Return-to-School plan.  On February 2, 2021, Dr. Brabrand and the team will share this plan during a School Board Work Session. Rest assured, as dates are communicated and plans are finalized, I will be hosting various grade-level Parent Information Nights to share specific information related to Sangster. As always, reach out if you have any questions.

This week I have been reflecting more and more on the year 2020. All of the highs and lows, heartaches and celebrations, wins and losses.  I know I experienced both extremes this past year, as many of you did as well.  Monday's messages of hope and unity in honor of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and yesterday's messages of patriotism during the Inauguration of President Biden were both important reminders that they work we do as educators must continue, no matter what. We may be tired and not able to see the road ahead, but our students depend on us, and that is all the motivation we need.

As we continue to forge ahead, keeping equity at the heart of what we do, I wanted to share two resources: a podcast and a You Tube video. The podcast is for all K- 6 parents and is sponsored by National PTA. The podcast topic is Raising Kids Who Embrace Race. The You Tube video is from Bookmarks:  Netflix Jr., and is a read aloud of a story filled with diverse characters and experiences. This particular story may be more suited for younger students to enjoy with their parents but there are several great stories to choose from. One of my favorite singers, Jill Scott, shares a really great book entitled "Pretty Brown Face."  Check it out if you can.

As always, I welcome your questions and thank you for your support.

Virtual School Picture Days

Mondays, February 1st and 8th

* Pre-order photos online *

Sangster ES Virtual School Picture Days are here! Please use the Sign-up Genius appointment link below to choose an appointment time for your student(s) to have a Lifetouch portrait taken in the school gym. Portrait appointments are available in 2-minute intervals on two Mondays, February 1st and February 8th from 9AM to 4PM.

If you DO NOT plan to send your child to Sangster ES to have their picture taken but want their photo in the Yearbook as part of their class picture, first create a Shutterfly account (if you haven’t already). Then access this link where you will be directed to a Google Sign Up form to share what email is associated with your Shutterfly account. From there, Ms. Mishael, our Yearbook Chair, can grant you access to share your child’s headshot (or close-up picture) on our Sangster Shutterfly Share Site. Please include your child’s first and last name, grade level, homeroom teacher, and Picture Day Portrait.

Lifetouch has developed COVID procedures for Picture Day: MyLifetouch.com COVID Procedures

Sangster safety protocols for Virtual School Picture Days are as follows:

  • All parents must adhere to the time they selected to have their child's picture taken.
  • Students should be dropped off in the bus loop, near the main doors of the school, 5-10 minutes prior to their scheduled time. Once dropped off, parents should then drive around to the Kiss-n-Ride lane (near the playground area) where their child will meet them.
  • All students must wear a face covering.  Masks will be removed when they have their picture taken, but social distancing will be in place.
  • Sangster staff will be present throughout the day to help students exit/enter their cars, while waiting in line to have their picture taken, and in the gym, alongside the Lifetouch staff.

If your child is not feeling well on Picture Day or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please keep them home.

Pre-order photos online before Picture Day

To ensure an efficient and contactless check-in on Picture Day, please order your photos online prior to Picture Day.

When ordering photos, use Sangster Picture Day ID number: EVTFG44N3

Required Forms before Students Return to School Buildings

Three forms must be submitted to the school before a student can return to the building: (1) Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment Form, (2) Emergency Care Form, (3) Students Rights & Responsibilities Parent Acknowledgement Form.

These forms can be submitted electronically via 24-7 Learning/ParentVue, using the weCare@school link.  Alternatively, they can be completed, scanned and emailed to Marian Hoelscher, Registrar at mthoelscher@fcps.edu

FCPS SR&R Parent Acknowledgement Form - This link is specific to Sangster ES students. Do not submit it for any student(s) who do not attend Sangster.

Progress Reports - Go Paperless

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to parent(s)/guardian(s) to receive electronic progress reports for their students. To go paperless, parents/guardians need to log into SIS/ParentVUE, go to “My Account”, and select "Go Paperless".  To prevent mailing of hardcopy progress reports, all parents/guardians who live with the student, and share the same address, must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the “Go Paperless” option . The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level.

If you do not have a ParentVue account, please contact our student registrar Marian Hoelscher at mthoelscher@fcps.edu

For more information: SIS/ParentVue

Attendance Update - Unexcused Absences

When parents report that their student(s) will be absent due to a family trip or vacation, the absence is considered "unexcused locally".  The attendance code UNL will appear in your student's attendance record.

Positivity Project

Week of January 17

Perseverance

This week’s character strength is Perseverance. You show this strength when you complete what you start despite obstacles and never give up. For individuals, persistence can be directly connected to an individual’s ability to be successful throughout their life. Those who persevere through setbacks often reap the benefits of the success gained by refusing to give up. Sometimes, this comes with the added benefit of increased knowledge and skill as a result of the work needed to achieve. Perseverance is also connected with bravery. Persisting in a task and failing, can result in depleted self-esteem. Therefore, it takes bravery to persist in a task despite the fear of failure.

The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).

Next Week’s Positivity Project focus is the Other People Mindset with an emphasis on supporting others when they struggle.
