Optional Virginia Early Childhood Family Survey
VDOE, UVA, and the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) want to learn about Virginia families’ experiences with the care and/or education for their young children (birth through kindergarten) this year. The Virginia Preschool Development Grant Birth through Five (PDBB5) study wants to reach as many Virginia families as possible to better understand the experiences and challenges of families with young children in Virginia. Learn more about it here, Virginia Survey of Families with Young Children flyer with your school community. Parents of young children are invited to participate in this study by completing a voluntary and anonymous survey available at vafamilysurvey.info.
From the Healthy Minds Blog: Tips for Building Resilience in Children
Many parents want their children to have a life that is free from stress, worry, and struggle. It is only natural to wish the best for your children, but in reality, life is full of unpredictable challenges.
A big part of a parent’s job is teaching children how to face those challenges, navigate through them, and ultimately overcome them. This is a skill that children need to develop as they are growing up and inevitably make the transition into adulthood and out of their safety net.
In the latest Healthy Minds Blog, learn how to help your child build resiliency.

Protect Yourself and Slow the Spread of COVID-19
Your actions keep all of us healthy. We need to keep it up and continue working together to help slow the spread of COVID-19. There are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family. Testing, contact tracing, and staying home and away from others when sick or after contact with someone who is sick, are also critical to help “box in” COVID-19 and prevent it from spreading further in our community. Click here for more information. Click here for COVID testing sites in Fairfax.
Click here to view the FCPS COVID dashboard for COVID-19 cases that have been self-reported to us. Data is updated weekly on Friday by 1 p.m. Any cases occurring after that time are reported for the following week.
This data should be interpreted with caution as it only reflects cases that have been shared with FCPS through self-reporting and may not be aligned to future epidemiological investigations. This data is currently being shared from a division level, as opposed to school or work site, so that it does not jeopardize sharing personally identifiable, confidential health information involving FCPS students and staff. Case reports indicate the total number of COVID-19 cases self-reported to principals, administrators, and program managers. Reports were shared with the Fairfax County Health Department to initiate contact tracing.
Effective November 2, the FCPS COVID-19 dashboard will be disaggregated and will present case data by school and case type (student, staff, visitor) and data will be updated daily.
Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program Registration opened on January 25th
FCPS offers elementary Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs in five languages.
Meal Distribution Update: Many Grab and Go Sites Switching to Weekly Meal Kits
Starting this week, many of the FCPS Grab and Go food distribution sites are switching from daily food pickup to weekly Fairfax Meal Kit distribution. Fairfax Meal Kits contain seven days of breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, and supper (at certain sites) items packed in bulk. The meal kits will be available for pick up every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until supplies are exhausted. Bus route pickups remain unchanged.
Go to the Food Distribution website to see if your meal site is changing.
During January and February, these sites will also be distributing fresh, local fruits and vegetables. Families that pick up no-cost meals will also be provided a fresh fruit or vegetable sourced from a local farm for each child, along with an activity sheet and recipe for that item. The item will vary each week, and will be available on the following dates:
- January 27
- February 3, 10, 17
As a reminder, it is important to follow social distancing guidelines. Be sure to stand a minimum of 6 feet apart from others and practice regular hand washing, including prior to leaving a residence to pick-up meals, upon returning home, and before consuming food. Please wear a mask when picking up the meal kits.
Grab and Go Breakfast and Lunch
Arrival times at bus stops may be delayed several minutes due to unexpected issues.

Free Tutoring
Is your student interested in a tutor?
Youth forYouthY4Y https://www.y4ytutoring.com/.
We are a team of Virginia students that provide free tutoring to any student in grades K-12, and in any subject of choice. By providing peer tutoring, our mission is to reduce the education gap in Northern Virginia. In this current virtual environment, our sessions are conducted through video-chat platforms such as Skype, Google Meets, or Zoom. Our sessions are once a week from anywhere between 45-90 minutes, though we can accommodate any special requests. For classes, we offer homework/classwork help and we also look at the curriculum sheets from ACPS or FCPS for a specific subject and grade level and teach topics that come up on those sheets. We ensure our tutors are well-qualified before we admit them as a tutor for Y4Y Tutoring, and that they have a way to mark improvement for their students and a plan of action for lessons.
