3rd Grade Material Pick-up
3rd Grade is having Material Pick Up on Monday, January 25th. There will be class materials for all subjects and Valentine’s Day Party activities.
Please come and get your packets, and say hello to the teachers! We will be at the cafeteria door, most likely under a tent if it is raining!
You will need to drive into the Hunt Valley Parking Lot, towards the Kiss N Ride area. Then pull up to Door 9 (Cafeteria area) and remain in your vehicle.

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Registration Information - for Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten Parents
Here is Information on the Fairfax County Public Schools registration procedures for parents who are interested in having their child participate in the Elementary Dual Language Immersion Program (DLI). The DLI online registration will open Jan. 25, 2021 at 9am.

All parents will need their FCPS SIS account to register. If parents do not have a SIS account, they will be directed to contact the school for an activation code. Parents of students not yet attending an FCPS school are required to register their child at their base school to obtain a SIS account.
Living With ADHD Support Group
Mrs. Berry and I are going to be holding a virtual meeting for the ADHD parenting group on Monday, Feb. 8th from 7:00pm - 8:00pm. This meeting is open to all parents with students that have attention, hyperactivity, and or executive function issues. At this meeting will be discussing the chapter 4 of “Parenting ADHD Now” by Elaine Taylor-Klaus and Dian Dempster about how to manage Hyperactivity. Please join us even if haven’t had a chance to read or get the book the discussion could be beneficial to you.

Message to 6th Grade Parents/Guardians:
Between March 1 and April 30, 2021, sixth-grade students at Hunt Valley Elementary School will receive two lessons on the topic of sexual harassment. These lessons seek to provide students with the necessary information, resources, and strategies to help prevent occurrences of sexual harassment as well as outline the steps to take if they feel they or their peers are targets of these behaviors. In addition, the lessons share how schools support targeted students so that they are able to continue to focus on learning in an environment that feels comfortable and secure. Parents/guardians may review the lessons through their ParentVue accounts, which may be activated at www.fcps.edu/it/MyParentAccount.
Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of the two sixth-grade lessons on the topic of sexual harassment. An eNotify with a link, to the Google form that MUST be filled out for all 6th grade students, was sent on Jan. 19th, 2021 that provide more information on how to opt your sixth-grade child out of the lessons about sexual harassment. SCA Box Tops
Dear Hunt Valley Families and Staff,
There is a new digital way to turn in your Box Tops. First, you will have to download the Box Top app to your phone. Next, you will have to fill in the information requested. Lastly, you will have to scan your receipt for the box tops near the barcode. Simple enough you are all done. Detailed instructions are attached here at this link:

West Springfield Little League
West Springfield Little League has extended registration for budding baseball players ages 5 - 8 until at least the end of January. WSLL welcomes both girls and boys to join the league and enjoy outdoor fun this spring. Space remains available in machine pitch and t-ball divisions of play. In light of the ongoing pandemic, the league has adopted several safety protocols to help minimize risks to players and families. You may register your child by visiting www.wsllbaseball.net. Welcome to 2021 and a new year of possibilities. I hope you got some rest and are energized and hopeful of what this year can become for all of us. With all of the current discussion surrounding vaccines, I have a question to ask…
Can we develop a Vaccine for Substance Abuse?
Technically speaking, a vaccine is “a substance use to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases”. While we may not be able to create a shot to protect us from drug and alcohol abuse, what if we could create a “behavioral vaccine”? Could we “prevent” our children from using substances even when they are “exposed”? Can we teach them “behaviors” for dealing with the major causes of substance abuse?
According to the 2019-20 Fairfax County Youth Survey, depressive symptoms, vaping, healthy eating and screen time are among the issues that influenced the health and wellbeing of our youth in the 2019-20 school year. We also know that when students have three or more positive, protective factors in their lives, they are more likely to manage stress, make better choices and develop healthy habits.
Fairfax County has developed the “3 to Succeed” model. These are “Protective Factors” that refer to the supports, opportunities and relationships our youth need across all aspects of their lives to achieve their potential. These include:
- Having high personal integrity
- Having community adults to talk to
- Performing community service
- Participating in extracurricular activities
- Having teachers recognize good work
- Having parents available for help
While we may not be able to develop a “vaccine” like we can for certain illness and diseases, we can all work together to develop a “behavioral vaccine” for our students. With the protective factors listed above, we can help our students be prepared for anything that will challenge them and prepare them to make smart decisions. Parent Health Screening Commitment Form
Parents of students returning to school (K-2nd) will need to complete the Health Screening Commitment Form in the ParentVue SIS account. When you log in to your account the form will be the very first thing you will see. You will need to open the document and accept it.
Reminder for Parents/Guardians about SIS ParentVUE
This year more than ever, SIS ParentVUE (PVUE) is an essential tool for parents/guardians to keep up with their student’s attendance, progress report cards, and more. This will be the first quarter that we have offered a PDF version of the progress report and ES parents/guardians now have the option to “Go Paperless” for all report cards and progress reports. We want to start establishing the PVUE habit early with ES school parents/guardians. At the end of last school year, we reached a high of 80% of FCPS students with at least one parent/guardian with a PVUE account. We want to keep those account numbers and the usage going up so we can rely on it as a communication tool with parents/guardians.
Please access PVUE periodically to check in on your student(s) attendance and to view progress reports at the end of each quarter. If you have not yet created a PVUE account, please do so by reaching out to the school SIA to provide an activation code. Tech Support for Parents and Students
To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.
Parents or guardians can call this number for basic tech support with parent accounts, help with FCPS student devices and technical assistance with other FCPS applications. If help desk staff members are unable to solve the issue, they will enter a support ticket on behalf of the parent/guardian to escalate the issue to the appropriate FCPS team. Parents who need help in a language other than English can inform the help desk staff when they call of their preferred language, and an interpreter will join in on the call.
FCPS has also set up Parent and Student Technology Support portal at https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/ to allow older students and parents/guardians to request technology help directly. When a support request ticket is entered through the portal, it is auto-routed to the TSSpec at the appropriate site to expedite service.

Thanks to a gift from the Hunt Valley PTA, you may now return your books, day or night, to the Library Book Return bin located next to the front door of Hunt Valley.

Pick book(s). If you know what you want, put the books on hold in Destiny (the library catalog). If you need some advice or aren’t quite sure the titles you’re wanting, use the Google Form to get assistance from the librarians.

Florian Bates invented T.O.A.S.T. (And not the kind that Mercy Watson loves to eat with butter!) “T.O.A.S.T. stands for the Theory of All Small Things…The idea is that if you add up a bunch of little details, it reveals the larger truth.” (page 23)
Florian and his new friend, Margaret, use T.O.A.S.T. to study people and places and use what they notice to put together the pieces to see a complete picture. But, what happens if the clues reveal a picture that involves priceless paintings, the National Gallery of Art, the FBI, and the Romanian Mafia!? GULP.
