Dear Wolftrap Families,
Although this is a short week of learning in school, there are many timely topics that you can talk with your children about regarding our country’s past and future. As you may be aware, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all to volunteer to improve their communities. I hope that you will encourage your children to honor Dr King's efforts to create a better world. If you are looking for suggestions, PBS has compiled ways to engage your children at home. Please remember that schools are closed tomorrow, January 20, in honor of Inauguration Day, and that we have a two hour early release on Friday for the end of the second quarter.
It is very exciting to hear that many of our teachers and staff are signing up to get the COVID vaccine this week and next. We are so fortunate to have partnered with INOVA to make this happen. While our staff have tried to make appointments after school hours, some have indicated that this is not possible and some teachers may have to assign independent work for part of a day next week. We know that you understand the importance of our staff being vaccinated as quickly as possible. I appreciate your understanding if your child’s teacher had to take an appointment during the school day. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Library Curbside Pickup Dates
Pickup dates for the third quarter are as follows:
Grades K-2:

Grades 3-6:
Jan 25, Feb 8, Mar 1, Mar 15
There will be no curbside pickup on February 15.

 The PTA has multiple activities going on in February! The community activities going on are detailed in this Connections issue to include a new fundraiser for Valentines opening up today, the Edison Expo with an exciting twist, and Talent Show Kickoff. Huzzah! Read more in this issue below.
Volunteers Needed: PTA activities can't be done without our volunteers. The PTA is looking for help in the following areas:
- Valentines Event: Distributing wooden roses
- Yearbook Committee: support picture placement and organization, marketing support for collecting new photos

Wolftrap PTA is offering the delivery of a wooden rose and a message.
The WES PTA Thinking of You Valentine’s Event is a community fundraiser to send friends, family, teachers and anyone else in the community a wooden rose and note letting them know you are thinking of them. February is just the month to let someone you know that you are thinking of them. Each Wooden Rose Valentine is only $4.00.

Delivery will occur February 11-13. *There is a pick up option too if you prefer to deliver it yourself.
You can even send one to the staff! If every student in the class buys one rose for the teacher then they will have a bouquet.

The Edison Expo is back this year with a 2021 twist – we invite all Wolftrap students (K-6) to participate in this year’s Edison Expo STEM challenge between the week of February 6 through February 16th. Create the tallest free-standing structure possible using approved materials, such as cups and paper plates. No adhesives (such as glue or tape) are allowed and no boxes. We will have classroom-level and grade-level prizes for the highest cumulative
towers.

Photo Portraits - Pictures will be taken in the Wolftrap gym on Monday, January 25 and Monday, February 1. To reserve a time slot, go here pickatime.com/vos/wolftrapes. Please only reserve one slot per student. Please note, your student is not required to have their picture taken. If you choose not to have a photo taken by the school photographer but would like to include your child’s photo in the yearbook, please submit a headshot to yearbook@wolftrappta.org
PAWS for Applause - Calling all 6th Grade Parents! Every year, sixth grade parents are able to submit a short message to their student(s) to be published in the Wolftrap Yearbook. Submit a message for your child here. Deadline is Friday, February 19th.
Cover Contest - All 3rd-6th grade students are invited to submit original artwork for this year's Yearbook Cover Contest. This year's theme is Virtually Unstoppable. See this year's flyer for specific details and requirements for submissions. Entries are due to the school office by Jan. 22.
Reminder to Parents - Thank you for all the wonderful photos you've sent to the Yearbook email. Keep them coming so we can include all of this year's students in our yearbook! Don't forget to include your child's name and grade in the email: yearbook@wolftrappta.org.

Believe it or not the Wolftrap Talent Show is approaching fast!! This year’s show is scheduled for Saturday, March 20th at 7:00 PM and, you guessed it, the performance will be 100% online. Always a tremendous opportunity to both see our Wolftrap students shine and to give our sixth graders a real showcase of their own. Acts are DUE by February 10th - Check out the Talent Show page for full details.

Save the Date - Mark your calendar for this year's 16th Annual Wolftrap 5k, back again this year in virtual format! Our Race and Silent Auction will take place from April 9th-18th. Registration for the Race opens on February 1st.

The Wolftrap PTA completed 100 flamingo flocks over Sept to December! Our flock has migrated, staying warm through the winter. But don't worry, the flamingo flock will be back February 22nd. They will be back for only a short period of time so order your flock now. The flock will be available from Feb 22nd - April 9th, 2021. To schedule your flock click here.
