Academic Advising and Course Selection

Academic Advising season is here!  During January, February, and March Mount Vernon’s school counselors will meet with all rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students for academic advising and course selection.

To assist students with selecting their courses for next year we have created a Virtual Curriculum Fair.  On this site students and families will have access to videos, brochures, and materials on all of Mount Vernon’s core, elective, and advanced academic courses. The site is in development so check back the week of January 18th for updates.

All rising 9th - 12th grade families are invited to our Virtual Curriculum Night.  Click here to RSVP now.  You will have the opportunity to talk to our Department Chairs, IB Coordinators and various elective teachers. Not sure if you want to take honors or standard?  The schedule will be posted on our Virtual Curriculum Fair website and emailed to registered families.

Attention Junior Families!

Starting next month, juniors will begin making important decisions about their seniors year schedules.  This is also an important time to begin exploring postsecondary options.

This week counselors met with their juniors for pre-advising lessons to prepare them for the course selection process.  For those who missed the session, the recording is linked here:  https://us.bbcollab.com/recording/152b7e1e702a46b9aafc908b474d9c0c

As you begin to explore your postsecondary options, take a look at these valuable resources

  1. FCPS has developed a Google Site for the class of 2022. Students must be logged into their FCPSschools.net account to view this resource.  Class of 2022
  2. The Virginia Opportunities Book (English); The Virginia Opportunities Book (Spanish)
  3. My Future’s College Planning Timeline

Your school counselor and our college and career specialists are always available to help you with your postsecondary planning.  Our Student Services team will host a virtual Junior Night in the coming weeks.  More details will be shared next week.

Science Fair

Science Fair season is upon us once more. Things will look different this year because of the pandemic, but we are still planning to have a fair!

The Mount Vernon Science Fair will begin on Tuesday, February 2 and we are in need of volunteer judges! Our IB and Honors science students have been working on their projects since September and we hope you can be a part of their Science Fair experience. Judging is easy! Previous experience as a judge is not needed; however, judges should have an interest in science.

This year, students will be preparing videos of their projects.  Judges will have several days to review these videos, evaluating student work using a simple rubric. The time commitment would be for Saturday, February 6th from 11:00-noon to discuss project placings and awards.

Our goal is to have as many volunteer judges as possible from the community. We would be honored to have you share this experience with our students.

If you are interested (or know someone who would be), please contact Alexander White at ahwhite@fcps.edu for further details about Science Fair judging.

Thank you in advance for your time!
