Glasgow Community Gazette - January 10

Glasgow Community:

It’s hard to believe that we are kicking off our academic advising season to help students start thinking about course selections for next year. In Panther Time last week, 6th and 7th grade students learned about the academic advising process, Glasgow’s elective course offerings, and drafted think sheets to plan their selections. 8th graders prepared for high school advising by learning about types of courses and how GPAs are calculated. This coming week 6th and 7th graders will sign up for their classes in StudentVUE. 8th graders will learn about high school credits and transcripts in preparation for course selections will take place through Panther Time later this month.

Throughout the month of January, teachers are also submitting course recommendations for their students. These recommendations will be shared with students and counselors will use teacher input along with student grades and course histories to inform the academic advising process. It is important, however, to keep in mind that most courses at Glasgow are open enrollment. For this reason, we encourage every parent to talk with their children about the courses they would like to take in this coming school year. Parents can view course selections through ParentVUE.

School counselors will be hosting academic advising office hours for students on Monday, January 11th and Friday, January 15th from 7:30am-2:15pm. Students can join office hours by going to this Google Classroom and clicking on the Google Meet link. Starting the week of January 25, Glasgow counselors will begin to meet individually with all students through History and Civics classes, Panther Time, and FIT.

Lastly, Glasgow will be hosting our Rising 6th Grade Curriculum Night on Tuesday, February 2nd. Rising 6th Grade Curriculum Night this year will include both asynchronous and synchronous components similar to our Back to School Night event this past fall. Students and their families will be able to watch videos from Glasgow staff representing all of the curriculum areas prior to joining for live town hall sessions in English from 6-45pm, in Spanish from 7-7:45pm, and in Arabic from 8-8:45pm. Links will be sent out soon. We look forward to seeing you then!

Please stop by and we will tune your student’s instrument. The weather this time of the year can be tough on wooden string instruments, causing them to go out of tune (meaning the strings are no longer the correct pitch) which can make playing very difficult for your student. Mrs. Dizon and Ms. Touzinsky will be able to tune the instrument in a matter of minutes and then you can be on your way again. Please consider bringing your student’s instrument to Glasgow MS this Monday.

January 11 - Library Mobile Monday - Glasgow MS librarians/staff are bringing the library out into the community! Mobile Mondays is here! Select your preferred language to sign up for the session. English, Arabic, or Spanish. You will receive a session link on the day of the event. We hope to see you on January 14th.

January 14 & 15 - FCPS GMS Catch Up Days - Per FCPS ever middle and high school should designate 2 "catch-up" days per quarter (one even day and one odd day). The intent of these days is to give students the opportunity to complete previously assigned work including missed assignments and NOT intended for completion of new assignments. Students should login to each class and check-in with their teachers on these days, support will be available during the regularly scheduled classes. .

Family Guide for Return to School - Fairfax County Public Schools is partnering with families to ensure we keep students and staff safe and healthy as we return to school buildings for learning. Working together, we will follow recommended health guidance that focuses on student and staff health, safety, and emotional well-being. The FCPS Family Guide for Return to School has a wealth of information on topics like concurrent instruction, lunch, the mandatory mask policy, recess, laptops, health protocols, and more.

Technology Support @Glasgow - We continue to encourage all families who are having issues with your Glasgow issued laptop to call the Parent/Student Tech Support Hotline at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).  The hotline is staffed 7 days a week from 7am to 11pm and multiple languages are available.  Alternatively, you can submit a support ticket online at https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/.  If it is deemed that the problem cannot be fixed virtually, we will set up a time for you to come to Glasgow for a repair or exchange between the hours of 10am – 2pm, Monday through Friday.  If you show up outside of those hours or without an appointment, we cannot guarantee a tech will be able to service your laptop in a timely fashion.  Also, to keep the student laptops running well, encourage your child to “restart” the laptop at least once a week.  A restart is in the power options and is not the same as turning the laptop off, then turning it back on.  Restarts are vital in making sure the laptop receives and installs the most current updates to ensure optimal performance.
