In partnership with FCPS and Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS), Volunteer Fairfax will begin offering virtual, family-friendly service learning activities on January 16.

Reading Tip of the Week

m

Mastering Sight Words

Reading is thinking, and children are called upon to use a variety of strategies to problem solve words. However, some words can’t be solved using conventional strategies and must be memorized. These words are called sight words. When learning sight words consider using a variety of media such as: playdough, wipe off boards/pens, magnetic letters, colored sand, paintbrush and water, and flour in a pan. In addition, it is important for children to locate a sight word immediately in a text after learning how to spell and read it in isolation. This is to ensure that students demonstrate reciprocity between reading and writing. To learn more fun ways to practice sight words with your child, click here.
