Justice Newsletter - January 3

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

Welcome back! I hope that you had a restful break. We are gearing up for more of our students’ return in late January! The most recent return to school timeline shared by Dr. Brabrand indicates 9th and 12th grade students who have elected to return in person will return to the building on Tuesday, January 26. Our 10th and 11th graders will return February 2. Remember this is subject to change based on health and safety metrics. To prepare for the return of students, staff are scheduled to return to the building no later than Tuesday, January 19.

Over the next few weeks, I will keep you informed by sharing important information to help students and parents as we transition from fully virtual to concurrent instruction. Please keep a look out for information about health and safety, classrooms and hallways, logistics, transportation, and schedules, and more. We will send it via newsletter and eNotify.

January 4 and January 11 - Teacher Prep Days:  The next two Mondays are designated “Teacher Prep Days” designed to support teachers’ preparation for the in-person return of students to school. Staff will come together on these days for professional development and meet with their teams/departments to prepare for this transition. Teachers will not be hosting office hours on these dates. Students must complete 4th period/advisory classroom google forms.

January 12 - Revised Bell Schedule Begins: The revised bell schedule for high schools is 8:20am - 2:50pm. The fifteen (15) minute reduction in the school day is due to the increased cleaning time required between bus runs. Additionally, as more students return to school, the number of students allowed on each bus will be reduced substantially to meet social distancing requirements. With fewer students able to ride a bus at the same time, FCPS had to adjust the times that buses are transporting students.

Mark your calendars! To support our 9th grade families and students new to Justice, many of whom have never seen our school, we will host an in-person 9th Grade & New Student Building Orientation by appointment on January 18, 21 and 22 only for students who have elected in-person instruction

Additionally, we are *tentatively* hosting Return to School Town Halls to provide information about logistics, health and safety, and other helpful information. If the return date gets pushed back, these evening events will be postponed.

  • Students Returning In-Person: Wednesday, January 13, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Students Remaining Virtual: Thursday, January 14, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

To register and submit questions, please click here by Tuesday, January 12 at noon. A link will be emailed to you by 3:00 p.m. on the day of the presentation. If you have any questions, email Michelle Campiglia, Assistant Principal, at mrcampiglia@fcps.edu.

As always, please reach out for questions or concerns.

2021-2022 Academic Advising

Our 2021-2022 Course Catalog is currently available online for 9th grade and 10-12th grade.

In mid-January, we will be posting a new Curriculum Fair Google Site (must be logged in with fcpsschools.net) that will have information via different media formats (videos, pictures, graphics, etc) on the courses at Justice. We will send a notification when the site is live.

We will also be offering a Curriculum 3-Night Extravaganza for both rising 9th graders and current Justice students. Each night will feature four departments with breakout rooms representing specific courses. There will be a quick overview presentation with time for a Q&A.

The tentative schedule is as follows (subject to change):

This year, starting Feb 2, school counselors will be meeting with their students virtually during English 11, H/PE 10, and H/PE 9 classes to review information about course offerings. We would ask that prior to these meetings, students enter their course requests online within SIS StudentVUE. Course Codes will be made available via Justice’s FCPS public website as well as Class Level Google Classrooms (Class of 2022 = 11th, Class of 2023 = 10th, and Class of 2024 = 9th) and are for reference only. Parents will be able to view the courses students have selected using their ParentVue account. CLICK HERE if you need help accessing your ParentVue account.

School-life balance is an important consideration as students strive for academic and personal success. Course selection is a collaborative process; students will need to seek the advice of their parents, teachers and school counselor to plan appropriately for the upcoming year in order to ensure success.

Exact Path Challenge

Starting in December 7th, Justice High School will kickoff the Exact Path Challenge for student success. As a reminder, Edmentum Exact Path is a K-12 personalized math, reading, and language arts program that pinpoints learning needs and provides each student a unique set of lessons and activities to close skill gaps and propel learning forward.

How to WIN!

  1. Students will be encouraged, during 4th period Advisory, to work in their Exact Path learning paths to make individual growth and master skills! Students also have the flexibility to work outside of 4th period advisory on their learning path.
  2. When students complete lessons successfully and earn 80% or above for each skill on their Progress Check (the assessment that follows each set of skills) they will earn Trophies!
  3. Students can track their success by reviewing their Rewards area. Here, they can check in on Trophies earned and Challenges completed.
  4. Become a winner!
  • Individual students who earn 5 or more Mastery Trophies will be entered into a grade-level monthly raffle to win prizes! The winners will be drawn at the end of each month.
  • The top 3 classes with the highest number of Mastery Trophies earned by June 2021 will be awarded with a JHS Wolf Pack gift bag and their teachers receive a gift card to be used for instructional materials.
  • Questions about the contest? Email Candace Hyman chyman@fcps.eduwill

Daily Health Screening Requirement

daily health screening, using Covid-19 Health Screening Questions, will be required for all students prior to coming onto school grounds (this applies for Material Distribution Days, in-person instruction, and co-curricular/extra-curricular activities). The health screening tool is available in EnglishAmharicArabicChineseFarsiKoreanSpanishUrdu and Vietnamese.

As indicated in the Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment form, parent/guardians, will complete the health screening each morning, prior to sending the student to school. In order to reduce the spread of communicable disease to student and staff, it is critical that parents/guardians accurately complete this screening daily and keep students home from school when exhibiting any symptoms. These health screenings will be done on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.

Parents or guardians will be required to make this commitment for all school-aged children in their household.

News from the Activities Office

Great News! FCPS has given the go ahead to begin to allow limited spectators at indoor events held on FCPS campuses. Per the Governors mandate that restricts spectators at indoor athletic events, we will need to limit attendance to 25 per game. Below outlines the timelines and the process we will use to institute this. A must read, should you have the opportunity to attend an event.

Starting January 4th - Per FCPS, fan attendance will begin for VARSITY ONLY HOME events. Attendance will be limited to 25 spectators and be free of charge.

Starting January 11th - Per FCPS, fan attendance will begin for ALL HOME events. Attendance will be limited to 25 spectators and be free of charge.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE

  • Per the Fairfax County Park Authority, there will be no spectators allowed at their pool facilities.
  • Due to facility occupancy restrictions, for the track meet on January 9th, spectators will be limited to SENIOR parents/families only. This will also be our track senior night.
  • Attendance will be allowed at HOME events only
  • Wrestling and Basketball coaches will be responsible for maintaining and updating a spreadsheet with the names of the 25 spectators per team. Names must be on this list to enter.
  • Currently, we estimate that we will be allowing 1-2 spectators per athlete, depending on roster size.
  • For Basketball and Wrestling events, fans are asked to arrive at entrance to the gymnasium, no earlier then 10 minutes prior to scheduled game time. We can not allow entrance to the school until any previous game fans have exited. If the weather isn't cooperative, you may want to wait in your cars.
  • As you enter the main gym entrance, you will will be required to take part in a Covid-19 screening, to include a temperature check.
  • Spectators will be directed to a specified section of the facility. There will be no concessions and outside food and drink is prohibited. (With the exception of water)
  • All spectators must wear masks at all times! Spectators will also be expected to practice safe social distancing while on the schools campus.
  • At the conclusion of the game, spectators will need to exit the facility as directed immediately. This is to ensure that we can have a smooth transition between games and allow staff to follow FCPS and VHSL protocols.

Although we understand that this doesn't get us back to normal and allow for everyone who wants to attend an event to do so, we hope that it is a step in that direction.

We remind everyone that SPORTMANSHIP is an expectation of those attending an event at Justice High School. As members of National District, Occoquan Region and the Virginia High School League we have high standards of sportsmanship that we expect from those in attendance towards the players, fans and officials. We appreciate you positive support!

We are currently working with our coaches and staff to set dates for our SENIOR NIGHTS. We plan to hold these earlier in the season than usual so that we have the best chance to complete them. We will update the below schedule as we confirm.
