Justice Newsletter - December 20

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

Happy Holidays!  On behalf of the Justice High School Staff, I hope you and your family are well and enjoying the season.  Winter Break is December 21, 2020 - January 1, 2021.

When we return from Winter Break, we will start planning for the 2021-2022 school year.  Due to the uniqueness of this year, we are trying to provide different opportunities to learn more about the courses offered at Justice. Please see below notes titled “2021-2022 Academic Advising.

While planning for the 2021-2022 school year, we are also preparing for the reopening of school next month.  All parents should login to SIS ParentVue and confirm their selection for in person or online learning.  Parents who chose in person learning should confirm their selections for in person meals and in person transportation.  Please complete this survey (https://forms.gle/MRGyr2kykh4P2LH88) on transportation and meal needs by Monday, December 28. You are welcome to email Assistant Principal Michelle Campiglia at mrcampiglia@fcps.edu with any questions.

I also want to remind families of the homework expectations we have at Justice over extended breaks. Students should not be given assignments to work on that are due immediately after they return from break. Additionally, assessments should not happen immediately upon returning from the break. We want students to take this opportunity to truly take a break from the challenging pace of school and ensure they take time to rest and connect with family and friends.

A huge shout out to both our Outstanding Staff nominees and Outstanding Staff winners.  We had so many nominations, and we are honored to recognize the following staff members:

    • Outstanding Professional Employee: Korey Berg – Head Athletic Trainer
    • Outstanding Operational Employee: Madeline Orozco – Administrative Assistance for Student Services
    • Outstanding Leader: Brian Garvey – Director of Student Services
    • Outstanding New Teacher: Victoria Hamilton – Math Teacher
    • Outstanding Teacher: Brooke Gehenio – Science Teacher.

When we return in January, we will have updates to share with regards to our in-person return to school.   We will be hosting a town hall, sending parent/guardian e-Notify messages and communicating with students through their advisory class as well as their fcpsschools.net email. Please be on the lookout for information.

Before we turn the page and bid farewell to 2020, please click here to enjoy a very special virtual presentation from the Justice HS/Falls Church HS combined choirs performing the Carol of the Bells

       See you next year, Justice!

 New Bell Schedule Starting

January 12, 2020

Each year, the Office of Transportation Services reviews the bell schedules for all Fairfax County public schools and makes minor adjustments as necessary to improve on-time arrivals.  As you can imagine, developing this school year’s bell schedule has been extremely challenging due to the pandemic.

At the School Board Work session on December 10, Superintendent Brabrand presented a revised phased- plan to return all students who have selected the in-person option starting in January, 2021. Staff worked to improve start times and end times for all levels.

Barring any changes to the plan that may be impacted by the pandemic, Justice will implement a new bell schedule to reflect a new start/end time of 8:20 AM – 2:50 PM effective January 12, 2021. The new bell schedule will be posted the week of Jan 4th.

The fifteen (15) minute reduction in the school day is due to the increased cleaning time required between bus runs. Additionally, as more students return to school, the number of students allowed on each bus will be reduced substantially to meet social distancing requirements. With fewer students able to ride a bus at the same time, FCPS has no choice but to adjust the times that our buses are transporting students.

2021-2022 Academic Advising

Our 2021-2022 Course Catalog is currently available online for 9th grade and 10-12th grade.

In early January, we will be posting a new Curriculum Fair Google Site (must be logged in with fcpsschools.net) that will have information via different media formats (videos, pictures, graphics, etc) on the courses at Justice. We will send another notification when the site is live.

We will also be offering a Curriculum 3-Night Extravaganza for both rising 9th graders and current Justice students. Each night will feature four departments with breakout rooms representing specific courses. There will be a quick overview presentation with time for a Q&A.

The tentative schedule is as follows (subject to change):

This year, starting Feb 2, school counselors will be meeting with their students virtually during English 11, H/PE 10, and H/PE 9 classes to review information about course offerings. We would ask that prior to these meetings, students enter their course requests online within SIS StudentVUE. Course Codes will be made available via Justice’s FCPS public website as well as Class Level Google Classrooms (Class of 2022 = 11th, Class of 2023 = 10th, and Class of 2024 = 9th) and are for reference only. Parents will be able to view the courses students have selected using their ParentVue account. CLICK HERE if you need help accessing your ParentVue account.

School-life balance is an important consideration as students strive for academic and personal success. Course selection is a collaborative process; students will need to seek the advice of their parents, teachers and school counselor to plan appropriately for the upcoming year in order to ensure success.

Exact Path Challenge

Starting in December 7th, Justice High School will kickoff the Exact Path Challenge for student success. As a reminder, Edmentum Exact Path is a K-12 personalized math, reading, and language arts program that pinpoints learning needs and provides each student a unique set of lessons and activities to close skill gaps and propel learning forward.

How to WIN!

  1. Students will be encouraged, during 4th period Advisory, to work in their Exact Path learning paths to make individual growth and master skills! Students also have the flexibility to work outside of 4th period advisory on their learning path.
  2. When students complete lessons successfully and earn 80% or above for each skill on their Progress Check (the assessment that follows each set of skills) they will earn Trophies!
  3. Students can track their success by reviewing their Rewards area. Here, they can check in on Trophies earned and Challenges completed.
  4. Become a winner!
  • Individual students who earn 5 or more Mastery Trophies will be entered into a grade-level monthly raffle to win prizes! The winners will be drawn at the end of each month.
  • The top 3 classes with the highest number of Mastery Trophies earned by June 2021 will be awarded with a JHS Wolf Pack gift bag and their teachers receive a gift card to be used for instructional materials.
  • Questions about the contest? Email Candace Hyman chyman@fcps.eduwill

Daily Health Screening Requirement

daily health screening, using Covid-19 Health Screening Questions, will be required for all students prior to coming onto school grounds (this applies for Material Distribution Days, in-person instruction, and co-curricular/extra-curricular activities). The health screening tool is available in EnglishAmharicArabicChineseFarsiKoreanSpanishUrdu and Vietnamese.

As indicated in the Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment form, parent/guardians, will complete the health screening each morning, prior to sending the student to school. In order to reduce the spread of communicable disease to student and staff, it is critical that parents/guardians accurately complete this screening daily and keep students home from school when exhibiting any symptoms. These health screenings will be done on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.

Parents or guardians will be required to make this commitment for all school-aged children in their household.
