New Bell Schedule - 9:45am-4:15pm

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Each year, the Office of Transportation Services reviews the bell schedules for all Fairfax County public schools and makes minor adjustments as necessary to improve on-time arrivals.

As you can imagine, developing this school year’s bell schedule has been extremely challenging due to the pandemic.

You may remember that new school bell schedules were announced in July. Our school’s bell schedule was changed. However, given the all-virtual start to the school year, there was no need to implement the new bell schedule.

At the School Board Work session on December 10, Superintendent Brabrand presented a revised phased- plan to return all students who have selected the in-person option starting in January, 2021.  Staff worked to improve start times and end times for all levels.

Barring any changes to the plan that may be impacted by the pandemic, the following bell schedule will be in place effective January 12, 2021 for both virtual and in- person instruction.

We feel this plan is a significant improvement and less disruptive over what was presented in the original plan last summer.

The fifteen (15) minute reduction in the school day is due to the increased cleaning time required between bus runs. Additionally, as more students return to school, the number of students allowed on each bus will be reduced substantially to meet social distancing requirements. With fewer students able to ride a bus at the same time, FCPS has no choice but to adjust the times that our buses are transporting students.

We understand that changes may present a hardship to some of our families and staff. However, it is the only way we can return all our grade levels to in-person learning, while following the critical guidelines to help keep our students and staff safe.

Elementary Family Life Education (FLE) Instruction Grades 4-6 Parent Preview Night

Jan. 13th- 5:30 PM-6:15 PM

If you are planning to attend, please use this form to RSVP by Friday, Jan. 8th and we will send you a link to the presentation 15 minutes prior to the meeting.

Human Growth and Development (HGD):

  • Grades 4-6
    • Our school will be instructing HGD the week prior to spring break (March 22, 2021-March 26, 2021)
  • HGD lessons modifications for this school year include:
    • Grade 5 will be limited to lesson 1 & 2 (Puberty and Reproductive Systems)
    • Grade 6 will omit lesson 4 (Sexually Transmitted Infections)

As a reminder, FLE instruction will be delivered by the classroom teacher.  If you have any questions regarding FLE instruction, please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher for more information or see this FCPS link: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education

If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form.

Opt-out letters and forms are available at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education.

Parents/guardians wishing to opt their child out of FLE instruction may return the completed opt-out form either in hardcopy or attached to an email.  Parents/guardians may also send an email stating the lesson(s) they are opting out of. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s teacher in writing before instruction begins. An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for children who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics Dashboard

The return to in-person instruction is currently determined by two core indicators as measured by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH): the number of new cases per 100,000 persons within the last 14 days and the percent positive test rate. FCPS has a public dashboard where you can see daily updates on these metrics as well as additional information on the specific thresholds that determine when each cohort may return to in-person instruction or when an in-person cohort may need to return to virtual instruction.

You can access the dashboard by clicking the COVID-19 Case Data button on the fcps.edu homepage or by following this link: https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/fcps-confirmed-covid-19-case-reporting

Reminder for Parents/Guardians about SIS ParentVUE

This year more than ever, SIS ParentVUE (PVUE) is an essential tool for parents/guardians to keep up with their student’s attendance, progress report cards, and more. This will be the first quarter that we have offered a PDF version of the progress report and ES parents/guardians now have the option to “Go Paperless” for all report cards and progress reports. We want to start establishing the PVUE habit early with ES school parents/guardians. At the end of last school year, we reached a high of 80% of FCPS students with at least one parent/guardian with a PVUE account. We want to keep those account numbers and the usage going up so we can rely on it as a communication tool with parents/guardians.

Please access PVUE periodically to check in on your student(s) attendance and to view progress reports at the end of each quarter.  If you have not yet created a PVUE account, please do so by reaching out to the school SIA to provide an activation code. Details on what can be found in PVUE and how to activate a new PVUE account using your activation code can be found here - Student Information System - SIS Parent Account Overview

Tech Support for Parents and Students

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Parents or guardians can call this number for basic tech support with parent accounts, help with FCPS student devices and technical assistance with other FCPS applications. If help desk staff members are unable to solve the issue, they will enter a support ticket on behalf of the parent/guardian to escalate the issue to the appropriate FCPS team. Parents who need help in a language other than English can inform the help desk staff when they call of their preferred language, and an interpreter will join in on the call.

FCPS has also set up Parent and Student Technology Support portal at https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/ to allow older students and parents/guardians to request technology help directly. When a support request ticket is entered through the portal, it is auto-routed to the TSSpec at the appropriate site to expedite service.
