Justice Newsletter - December 13

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope that you are enjoying this beautiful sunny day.

Last week, our students and staff participated in Academic Catch Up Days on Thursday and Friday. These days provided time for students to work on missing work, retake assessments and get additional support from their teachers without new assignments or assessments. We received feedback from students and staff that these days were helpful for them to get caught up.

We kicked off our winter sports season last week with our basketball teams starting try outs. Next week we will proceed with swim/dive, wrestling and track. Students and staff have strict guidelines that we are monitoring to ensure everyone's safety. For more information on our protocols and procedures, click here.

At the most recent school board meeting, Dr. Brabrand presented the division’s “Return to School Update,” (go to meetings, click on December 10, view agenda) which included changes to when staff and students return to the building. Dr. Brabrand will be sending out an update to staff and the community soon. Stay tuned for more detailed information.

With that said, as of yesterday the current health metrics in our region reached a threshold where Group 3 students and staff will return to virtual instruction beginning Monday, December 14, 2020.

FCPS has been using two core health indicators, suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to guide its decisions about in-person instruction. These include the total number of COVID cases per 100,000 county residents over the last 14 days and the percentage of positive COVID tests over seven consecutive days.

For Group 3 to remain in-person, the positivity rate must not exceed 10 percent. As of Saturday, December 12, we reached seven consecutive days in which the percent positivity exceeded our 10 percent threshold. As a result, Group 3 is returning to virtual instruction.

We value the partnership that we have with you, our families, to help our students be as successful as possible.  If you have needs or concerns, please reach out to your child's teacher, counselor and/or administrator.

SOL Retakes in January 2021

Justice HS will offer the Winter SOL retakes during the month of January. Your student has the opportunity to opt-in to take any SOLs they need for a verified credit in science, English, history or math. If your student chooses to take advantage of this opportunity – they should contact their counselor to be placed on the opt-in list by December 18. Seniors who need one or more verified credits to graduate do not need to opt in. They will be automatically signed up to take any SOLs needed for graduation. Remediation will be provided for seniors needing a verified credit(s) to graduate in 2021. If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact your student’s counselor.

The Verdict is now online & needs your input!

The Verdict, Justice High School’s student newspaper, is now online! You can check out our website here! This year, because we aren’t in the building and in distance learning, it’s hard to know all the cool things our students and community members are doing, so we’re asking for your help! We want to share and recognize the amazing things our school is doing even in a virtual environment.  If you know of someone (staff, student, club, community member) who we should feature, please let us know! Stories, photos, and ideas welcome!

If you have an idea for a story that you’d like to see covered in The Verdict, please email us at theverdictstaff@gmail.com.

As a reminder, Edmentum Exact Path is a K-12 personalized math, reading, and language arts program that pinpoints learning needs and provides each student a unique set of lessons and activities to close skill gaps and propel learning forward.

How to WIN!

Daily Health Screening Requirement

daily health screening, using Covid-19 Health Screening Questions, will be required for all students prior to coming onto school grounds (this applies for Material Distribution Days, in-person instruction, and co-curricular/extra-curricular activities). The health screening tool is available in EnglishAmharicArabicChineseFarsiKoreanSpanishUrdu and Vietnamese.

As indicated in the Parent/Guardian Health Screening Commitment form, parent/guardians, will complete the health screening each morning, prior to sending the student to school. In order to reduce the spread of communicable disease to student and staff, it is critical that parents/guardians accurately complete this screening daily and keep students home from school when exhibiting any symptoms. These health screenings will be done on an honor basis and will not be required to be submitted to the school.

Parents or guardians will be required to make this commitment for all school-aged children in their household.

Senior Transcripts/Letters of Recommendation

Students must turn in their transcript requests to the Student Services office 30 days in advance of the college deadline. Students who are applying to colleges with a December and January deadlines need to submit their requests to the transcript assistant in Student Services promptly. These reminders are sent in an effort to avoid unnecessary stress. The transcript request form is available on the counselor’s Google Classroom and by clicking here: JHS Transcript Request Form. Please contact your child’s school counselor if you have any questions.

Scholarship Transcript Requests- Students who would like an unofficial transcript to use for scholarship applications, must request them on the JHS Transcript Request Form and indicate it is for a scholarship
