Return to School #15

Kilmer team prepares and plans for return to school.

A message from Principal, Amy Miller:

Dear Kilmer Families,

Every year, FCPS facilitates an Outstanding Employee Recognition Program. Below are the Kilmer Staff members who have been nominated by their colleagues as outstanding employees.

Sheryl Jones, Outstanding Teacher

Michelle Lyttle, Outstanding Leader

Charlene Horne, Outstanding Professional Employee

It is an honor to be recognized as an outstanding employee and the work of these employees reflects the hardwork and dedication of our entire Kilmer Staff.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the November Crosstown Cup. We are excited that we had over 400 entries and are proud to have won the cup for the month of November. The competition continues in December so keep logging those exercises. You can find the form here

Sincerely,

Amy Miller, Principal

Winter Break Is December 21 to January 1, 2021

As a reminder, this year winter break starts on December 21 and ends on January 1, 2021. Synchronous classes will resume on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. Monday, January 4, 2021, is an asynchronous independent work day for students.

Asynchronous Mondays start January 4

As we prepare to return students to the building we will be transitioning Mondays to full independent learning days starting Monday, January 4. On Mondays, students will engage in asynchronous work assigned by their teachers. Starting January 4, students will no longer attend the PAWS Advisory class on Mondays. However, we are mandated to take attendance on Mondays so every student will need to login into his/her PAWS Advisory Schoology Site and complete the Google form that will be posted in the banner. We ask that students do this by 9:30 AM.

What’s on the Shelf: News from the Kilmer Library

Winter break is a wonderful time to step back from the screen a bit and pick up a book! We have a few more opportunities for curbside checkout over the next week. Cougars @ the Curb will be open on Monday, December 14 from 1:00pm to 3:30pm and on Thursday, December 17 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. If your child is signed up for student pictures on Thursday evening, why not put a few books on hold and combine it with curbside library checkout? More info on our Cougars @ the Curb program: http://tinyurl.com/courgarscurb

In other news, School Library Journal has released its Best Books 2020 list! Explore a great selection of titles for readers who love everything from picture books to young adult books, graphic novels to non-fiction.

Yearbook Portraits

Please sign up to get your portrait taken. Students have two options to include a portrait in our yearbook.

  1. As noted in last week’s News You Choose, all families received a communication from Lifetouch last week for an appointment on Photo Day - Thursday, December 17 from 3-7pm.  If you did not receive an email, the link to sign up is https://booknow.appointment-plus.com/ckhqrh94. A make-up day will be held in February. Photos will take place in the gym and hallway with required health and safety guidelines.  All students must wear a mask except when their photo is taken.  Upon arriving at the Kilmer campus, parents should park around the bus loop and remain in their car until their student is finished (~5 minutes). Students will begin the photo process with the Health Screening Station at the school entrance by the trailers at the back of the parking lot. We will have people out directing traffic and showing students where to go.

Order by December 17th on mylifetouch.com using the Picture Day ID EVTFQNSJC

     2.  We are also working with our yearbook publisher, Walsworth, to use a   downloadable app in order to take portraits with plain backgrounds. This app will also be used to send in photos directly from families. More information to come within the next few weeks.

Kilmer Pantry

We continue to replenish our food pantry with non-perishable food items for our families in need.  We will have our first distribution to more than 35 families next week.

We are collecting items through a drive thru donation every Monday from 3:00 – 5:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you next Monday, December 14th.

In addition families are invited to donate non-perishable food items by direct shipping from Amazon, Target, Walmart, or wherever you shop (send to the attention of Debra David at Kilmer). This Amazon WishList includes a list of potential items to donate.

Donation requests include: Pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, pasta, rice, beans, cereal, oatmeal, cooking oil, peanut butter, crackers, microwave popcorn, granola bars, canned fruit/applesauce, canned tuna, canned veggies, instant macaroni and cheese.

We are grateful for the support of our Kilmer Community and are hopeful to see you at one of our Monday drive thru donation times.

If you want your family to receive food, please contact your child’s counselor.

Photos to include in Kilmer’s Yearbook

Did you take pictures of the first day of “virtual” school? Did you have photos of playing with your local sports team? Did you dress up for Halloween?

Kilmer’s yearbook committee has begun collecting photos to include in this year's very unique yearbook. Right now, we are looking for photos of:

  •         First Day of School
  •         Halloween
  •         Playing on a team (soccer, basketball, etc.)
  •         Doing school work
  •         At home projects or experiments for class.
