NEW News

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Happy Friday, Woodson families!

Depending on the COVID metrics, this week could be the beginning of a pause of our current in person learning group 3.   FCPS, the Fairfax County Health Department as well as the CDC help determine when we would phase in and out student learning groups based on various metrics.   As of last night, our School Board received the following plan to phase in our high school students:

In Person Group 8, Grades 9 and 12 return January 26, 2021

In Person Group 8, Grades 10 and 11 return February 2, 2021

We will be swiftly planning an orientation for our 9th graders and our new to Woodson students that will most likely occur on January 19 or 21. Stay tuned for details!

You can view last night’s presentation here or watch the meeting on Youtube

Please know FCPS Division Leadership will be sending more information next week about further changes to our grading and reporting systems.

In other news, while there are no updates to graduation or other events I will have a town hall for our seniors on Wednesday, December 16 at 6PM to hear ideas for how we can celebrate our seniors.  We will take these ideas to the PTSO as well as the Senior Class sponsors and officers to see how to make some of these events happen.  We will send a link on Wednesday through eNotify and the Class of 2021 Google Classroom.  As you may be aware, these platforms are limited capacity, so please share the computer within your household if possible.

Please have a restful weekend, everyone!

Dr. Floyd
Principal

3. Woodson Leadership Food Drive

Please consider dropping off some non-perishable grocery items for the 7th annual Woodson Food Drive.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, we are unable to collect food at many grocery stores, so we are collecting food items at Woodson (Door 3) on Saturday, December 12th from 9:00 AM -12:30 PM

All the food will be delivered to the Annandale Food Site, a non-profit, community based organization, that serves over 100 families in our community.  Woodson Leadership students will be there to collect your items.

All Covid-19 guidelines will be followed, so please be respectful of social distancing and masking requirements when dropping off food.

For more information contact Dan Schaefer djschaefer@fcps.edu

4. Athletics News

Welcome back to sports!  Our goal is to continue providing athletic opportunities for our students in the safest possible manner.  To that end, we ask for your help in a couple of critically important areas.

Please, do not send your child to practice or workouts if:

  • He/she complains of not feeling well and/or has any of the following:
    • Feeling feverish and/or having chills (if documented temperature/fever of 100.4F or greater)
    • A new cough not due to another health condition
    • Fatigue (more tired than usual)
    • Nasal congestion or runny nose
    • Headache
    • A new sore throat not due to another health condition
    • New chills not due to another health condition
    • New muscle pain not due to another health condition or that may have been caused by a specific activity such as physical exercise
    • New loss of taste or smell, new onset of poor appetite or poor feeding Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • He/she has been exposed to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 or displays signs or symptoms associated with COVID-19
  • He/she has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting results OR another family residing in the same house has been tested and is awaiting results

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) recently recommended the following: “During times of substantial COVID-19 activity VDH strongly advises athletes to wear masks at all times during group training, competition, and on the sidelines.”

Beginning Friday, December 11th, students participating in FCPS athletic programs, to include in-season practices and competitions as well as out-of-season workouts, are required to wear masks during all aspects of athletic participation in all sports with the exception of wrestling, gymnastics and swim and dive.

With everyone’s help, we look forward to a successful season!

12. Parent Technology Help Desk

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.
