Computer Science Education Week- Dec. 7-11

All students will be challenged to complete an Hour of Code!

We live in a world surrounded by technology. We know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.

Only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Just 35% of all high schools teach computer science.

That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code.  More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Hunt Valley is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. This is a chance to change the future of education in Fairfax County.

See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.

How to use PROMPTS effectively and efficiently

Prompts are tools we add to a situation to increase the likelihood of children responding correctly. There are various types of prompts:

Modeling: showing the child the correct response

Gestural: giving a gesture or movement that shows the student what to do. This could be pointing, nodding, making eye contact, or looking at a specific area or item.

Verbal: providing verbal language to cause the correct response.

Visual: pictures, text, or photos that elicit a correct response

The goal for using prompts is to increase and develop children’s independence with correctly responding to daily academic and behavioral tasks. We don’t want children to become dependent on prompts, therefore fading prompts is as important as using prompts.

When the desired skill is occurring reliably with the prompts given, it is time to gradually fade the support.  Fading support can include modifying the original prompt or incorporating a different type of prompt in which the support can be removed easily as the skill is acquired.

Using and fading prompts is important for our learners to be functional and independent inside and outside the classroom.

Prompting in Action Example

Task: Logging on to the computer

I model each step to log on to the computer (first turn on computer, next type in username and password, then open internet, and lastly access virtual classroom link).  As opportunities present itself, I prompt the child through each step by continuing to model.  As the child demonstrates the response correctly, I begin prompt fading by moving to a gestural prompt (pointing to each step), a verbal prompt (saying the steps or just key words such as First, Next, Then, Lastly), or a visual prompt (steps written down or with pictures).  Once the skill is acquired, I remove all prompts to ensure independence.

FCPS COVID-19 Health Metrics Dashboard

The return to in-person instruction is currently determined by two core indicators as measured by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH): the number of new cases per 100,000 persons within the last 14 days and the percent positive test rate. FCPS has a public dashboard where you can see daily updates on these metrics as well as additional information on the specific thresholds that determine when each cohort may return to in-person instruction or when an in-person cohort may need to return to virtual instruction.

You can access the dashboard by clicking the COVID-19 Case Data button on the fcps.edu homepage or by following this link: https://www.fcps.edu/return-school/fcps-confirmed-covid-19-case-reporting

Reminder for Parents/Guardians about SIS ParentVUE

This year more than ever, SIS ParentVUE (PVUE) is an essential tool for parents/guardians to keep up with their student’s attendance, progress report cards, and more. This will be the first quarter that we have offered a PDF version of the progress report and ES parents/guardians now have the option to “Go Paperless” for all report cards and progress reports. We want to start establishing the PVUE habit early with ES school parents/guardians. At the end of last school year, we reached a high of 80% of FCPS students with at least one parent/guardian with a PVUE account. We want to keep those account numbers and the usage going up so we can rely on it as a communication tool with parents/guardians.

Please access PVUE periodically to check in on your student(s) attendance and to view progress reports at the end of each quarter.  If you have not yet created a PVUE account, please do so by reaching out to the school SIA to provide an activation code. Details on what can be found in PVUE and how to activate a new PVUE account using your activation code can be found here - Student Information System - SIS Parent Account Overview

Tech Support for Parents and Students

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Parents or guardians can call this number for basic tech support with parent accounts, help with FCPS student devices and technical assistance with other FCPS applications. If help desk staff members are unable to solve the issue, they will enter a support ticket on behalf of the parent/guardian to escalate the issue to the appropriate FCPS team. Parents who need help in a language other than English can inform the help desk staff when they call of their preferred language, and an interpreter will join in on the call.

FCPS has also set up Parent and Student Technology Support portal at https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/ to allow older students and parents/guardians to request technology help directly. When a support request ticket is entered through the portal, it is auto-routed to the TSSpec at the appropriate site to expedite service.

First Chapter Friday

crime biters

First Chapter Friday is Crime Biters! My Dog is Better Than Your Dog, written by Tommy Greenwald, illustrated by Adam Stower.

Jimmy Bishop loves three things: dog videos, his favorite detective TV show Stop! Police!, and vampires.  Is that why he thinks his brand-new puppy, Abby, is a vampire detective?  Of course, no one believes him.  But.  Wait.  Is Abby a vampire detective?
