NEW News

Morning News Show

The most recent episode from the Woodson Broadcast Studio starts with Ms. Pugnetti and Mr. Williams in the activities office.

1. Message from Dr. Floyd

Happy rainy Friday, Woodson families!

I trust this message comes to you at a time your family is safe and hunkered down for some rain this weekend.  Someone said if this was snow it would be several feet!  While I am looking forward to hopefully having some measurable snow, I’m not too keen on more than a few inches. Can’t be picky, though, right?

Seniors!   You all are doing a great job hanging in this year!   I know this end of your K-12 public education experience is not how you might have pictured it, but we are still working to get us there – safely!   I’ll be hosting a town hall for seniors to check in with you all on Wednesday, December 16th at 6PM.  Parents can join with you.  Please keep in mind there are capacity limits on the virtual event sites, so we will try and post the recording or offer another town hall in January if needed.   We will also send out the highlights.   There isn’t any “new” information.  Graduation is scheduled for 2PM on Wednesday, June 2nd at EagleBank Arena, if health conditions and FCPS allow.  If we can’t do that then we will figure out an alternative based on what is permitted at that time.  As of right now, FCPS has not scheduled or approved any alternative arrangements.  On the town hall, I want to hear ideas you may have to re-envision activities like pep rallies and Prom if we are not back in person or not allowed to have such large group activities – what could we do?  The link to join the town hall will be sent on December 16th.

We plan to be back with the concurrent learning model on Tuesday, January 26th.  More details will be laid out for the school board on Thursday, December 10th at their work session.  Also, there is more information on the third metric of school based mitigation strategies, please read about the third metric in Dr. Brabrand’s email he sent on December 3, 2020 to learn more about all that goes into the decisions around returning to school.

Please have a restful weekend, everyone!

Dr. Floyd
Principal

2. Computer Science Education Week

The global Computer Science Education Week is December 7 - 13. To celebrate the CS Honor Society is hosting two Hour of Code events after school to teach students what CS is and how it can apply to virtually any field of interest. Both events are open to all Woodson students and no programming experience is necessary!

The Tuesday, December 8th workshop focuses on simulating a virus outbreak among healthy and sick monsters, and the participants get to create remedies such as masks and vaccines to slow and control the spread.

On Thursday, December 10th we are giving a basic introduction on how to write an app that could be run from a personal device. This one allows for the participants to bring their personal interests to their programs.

The signup is located at https://tinyurl.com/wtwcode2020.

5. Woodson Key Club Collecting Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots

The Woodson Key Club will work with the Toys For Tots organization run by the U.S. Marine Corps in the oncoming weeks to help those in need during the holidays. The toys donated will be given directly to individual families and organizations that will help those in need.

Please leave donations in the bin outside Door 18 between now through Friday, December 11th. Or, you can donate to the virtual toy box on the Toys for Tots website.

Toy donations can be for all ages, but must be new, unwrapped, and not resemble any weapons or food. Some common donation themes include books, sports equipment, board games, etc. Donations will be used to brighten up the day of those less fortunate.

The Key Club canned food drive was also a great success with over 500 pounds worth of food donated to those in need and Key Club would like to take a moment to thank those who donated their time and effort towards supporting such a worthy cause.

6. Woodson Leadership Food Drive

Please consider dropping off some non-perishable grocery items for the 7th annual Woodson Food Drive.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions, we are unable to collect food at many grocery stores, so we are collecting food items at Woodson (Door 3) on Saturday, December 12th from 9:00 AM -12:30 PM

All the food will be delivered to the Annandale Food Site, a non-profit, community based organization, that serves over 100 families in our community.  Woodson Leadership students will be there to collect your items.

All Covid-19 guidelines will be followed, so please be respectful of social distancing and masking requirements when dropping off food.

For more information contact Dan Schaefer djschaefer@fcps.edu

11. FAQs for New Activities & Athletics Registration Site

FCPS activities and athletic programs has transitioned to a new online student registration system.  This new system offers a host of benefits for schools and community members including:

  • One stop shop for registering your student for athletic programs and many common activities occurring throughout the school year
  • Electronic submission of the emergency care card and weight room waiver- only have to fill these out once!
  • A new home for the state-mandated concussion education program.

Frequently Asked Questions-

  1. If I already turned in paperwork (Emergency Care Form and Concussion Ed), do I need to submit again through the Registration site?  Yes. We need to have everyone resubmit their information and training through this new portal.
  2. When registering my student, the physical date I see is a date from last year or it is not there at all. Do I need to turn one in again?    If you have not turned in a sports physical that is dated after May 1, 2020, to cover this 2020-21 school year, then yes, you still need to turn one in. Either scan the completed physical to the Athletic Trainer, Chris Hogge at chogge@fcps.edu, mail it to Woodson, or drop it off in the Main Entrance of Woodson. Once received, and once we upload the dates into the system, the current 2020-21 physical date should show.
  3. What if my student changes their mind about which sport to try out for?  If your student decides they want to try out for an additional sport that was not originally selected on their registration, you will need to log back in and update/add the sport.
  4. When do I need to submit the online registration by? Online Activity Registration is required before the first day of try-outs for your specific sport/activity. However, paper copies of the Emergency Care Form will be expected for out of season work outs for this school year only. In the future, we anticipate using this portal for all ECC submissions.

If you have any further questions, please contact Chris Hogge, athletic trainer at chogge@fcps.edu or Alexa Pugnetti, administrative assistant at alpugnetti@fcps.edu.

13. Parent Technology Help Desk

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and a interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.
