Virtual Parent Meeting With Principal Lemmon: Return To School Updates

As you are aware, I will be hosting a meeting on Wednesday evening, December 2nd at 6:00pm in English https://bit.ly/ParentMeetingEnglish and at 7:00pm in Spanish https://bit.ly/ParentMeetingSpanish to answer questions regarding our plan for shifting to hybrid learning.  We selected a model that allows for most students to stay with their current teacher and honors families who have selected virtual with less concurrent instruction. In total, I will need to move ten students in the entire school for this model to work.  We made these decisions with the following in mind based on feedback from PTA and our professional knowledge and experiences.

  • Students if at all possible should stay with the same teacher if the class meets student needs and instructional program needs are available for a student in that classroom.
  • Students who chose virtual should have concurrent time minimized to the extent possible.
  • The Concurrent Instructional Model is new and implementing it will be a journey.

In most classrooms, the teacher will teach concurrently two days a week with children learning in person and online in the class at the same time, and two days in which all children in the class will be virtual.

In our 5th grade Spanish Immersion classes only, we have been able to make an all virtual class, which means the students will participate virtually without the concurrent model (this is the model we are all using while we are virtual).  We have sent eNotitfy messages to parents in classrooms in which a teacher change may be necessary. Additionally, we will be entering into SIS the days of the week for in person instruction. Your teacher will also communicate with you the anticipated days of the week on December 6th , and  will confirm prior to winter break.  If a family does not want the days of the week assigned, families should contact me, Marie Lemmon, Principal mmlemmon@fcps.edu and  I will need to change the teacher to prioritize parent request for days of the week. If a family with a child in Spanish Immersion does not want the days of the week assigned, I may not be able to guarantee a placement in Spanish Immersion.

I will do everything in my power to work with each family. However, it is unlikely, I will be able to honor requests to change to in-person if you did not select it by the deadline. I may be able to honor a one time change to all virtual.  I appreciate that this is not ideal and at the same time, I feel confident this is the best plan for learning as it honors relationships and time for teachers to teach using familiar best instructional practices.
