Asynchronous Days for Grades 1 & 2

November 20, 23, and 24 will be asynchronous work days for all first and second grade students as their teachers prepare for some students to return to school for in-person instruction.

Mondays Are School Days!

Please have your child sign in to school/begin school work by 11:00 a.m. each Monday.  This will help us record attendance as required by the state of Virginia. It will also save the office staff from making many phone calls to verify attendance.

FREE KMES Spirit Wear for all Students

The generous KMES PTA purchased a 2020-2021 Kanga t-shirt for every student!  The t-shirts and class pictures from last school year will be available for pickup on Monday, November 30 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.  Please write your child’s name, grade, and shirt size in large, clear print on a piece of paper to hold up as you come to the K&R.  Volunteers will bring your child’s t-shirt and picture to your car.  Kindergarten students will also receive workbooks from their teachers.

Volunteers Needed to Help Distribute Spirit Wear

Please sign-up here and plan to meet Mrs. Colter at Kiss and Ride at 3:45 PM on Monday, November 30th. Remember to wear your mask and maintain a six- foot distance from others.

KMES Employment Opportunity

KMES will be hiring three classroom monitors to provide in-person classroom assistance for students when a staff member remains virtual.  If you would like more information about the position, please review the job description and qualifications online and apply if interested. We also ask that you email assistant principal Tim Paper at TSPaper@fcps.edu to let us know that you have applied! Please feel free to share information about this opportunity with anyone else you think may be interested.

Referrals for Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV Screening Due December 1

Tuesday, December 1st is the close of the window (September 8th-December 1st) for parents to submit a referral form for their student to be screened for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV. The parent referral form, submitted to the school, is one pathway to have a student screened for AAP Level IV. To submit a referral, please email the referral to Patricia Fawcett.  Parents should not wait for an announcement of the second grade screening pool if they want to make sure their student is screened for AAP Level IV in the coming cycle. Parents of students in grades 2-7 will need to submit the referral form no later than December 1st.

Referrals will not be accepted after December 1. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Fawcett.

Providing REINFORCEMENT to Children

Reinforcement is a technique used to reinforce when a child is displaying appropriate behavior. Using positive reinforcement increases the likelihood that a behavior will be repeated in the future. Reinforcement can also be an effective way to encourage and motivate your child to be responsible, do their chores, get along with their siblings, or complete their assignments without arguing.

There are many ways to reinforce the behavior you want to encourage.  You can positively reinforce a child’s behavior by:

  • Clapping and cheering
  • Giving a high five
  • Giving a hug or pat on the back
  • Giving a thumbs-up
  • Offering a special activity, like playing a game or reading a book together
  • Offering verbal praise
  • Giving extra privileges
  • Giving tangible rewards

Aim to offer reinforcement right away once the good behavior starts and continue to provide consistent reinforcement throughout. This will give your child a sense of success and encourage them to continue to demonstrate the appropriate behaviors.

Remember behavior goes where reinforcement flows!
