Herndon Middle School will have three “catch up days” during the second quarter. All secondary schools will have required catch up days each quarter. Catchup Days are days where students have no new instruction and are just given the opportunity to complete work and get help from teachers.
This can also be time for students to make up missed assignments and time to retake assessments. The following days will be catch up days for quarter 2 at Herndon Middle School in all classrooms.
- Thursday, December 17th
- Friday, December 18th
- Friday, January 22nd (This is the last day of the second quarter. 1/18 and 1/20 are holidays and 1/19 and 1/21 are currently scheduled as Prep Days for concurrent instruction and all classes will be asynchronous.)
The following procedures will be in place for the catch up days.
- Students must sign in each period by coming online synchronously during their class period.
- Student attendance is required for catch-up days.
- Students will report to every class and be dismissed as deemed appropriate by the teacher.
- No new content will be taught.
- Students missing work should remain in the class to identify and complete missing work, with the teacher available to support.
- Students who are caught up with all their assignments and achieving in the class may be dismissed from the virtual session and engage in practice or enrichment work that is not graded.

We have considered the needs of our students and teachers have given feedback on the fourth period advisory. In addition, we have considered input from our parents. Starting this week, there will be only one SEL lesson during the advisory period and it will be on Wednesdays for about 30 minutes. The rest of the time on Wednesday and the full 4th period on Fridays will be Hawks Nest Time. This is time for students to work on assignments and get organized. We are also working on a pass procedure for students to get help from other teachers as needed during the Hawks Nest Time. So, going forward, our students will have more time during the 4th period to receive additional support in their classes. Attendance is still required. Our assistant principal, Ms. Bromberg, has designed a survey to get additional feedback from students so that we can also consider their ideas as we refine our advisory period.
