Cameron News You Choose 11/24/2020

Principal's Note

Happy Thanksgiving Families,

Mrs. Tkach and I wish all of our Cameron families a Happy Thanksgiving! We have so much to be thankful for as we take this time to pause during these challenging times. Thanksgiving is a time for families to come together and create fond everlasting memories. This Thanksgiving will probably look different for many of us, but we will continue to persevere and enforce safety protocols to keep everyone safe and healthy. One of Cameron’s strong attributes is COMMUNITY, and we are thankful for your dedication, commitment and support that make our school SHINE. Enjoy your holiday, and we will see the students next Monday, November 30th.

Helping Students Succeed In The Virtual Setting

suc

Our teachers are working and doing their very best to create engaging learning content and frequently check in with students.  And, FCPS content blocking software does have it’s limitations when students are on the internet.

Our goal is to partner with families to maximize the LEARNING in the virtual setting.

Here are a few things you can do to help make sure your child is getting the most from distance learning.

  • Encourage or Require your student to turn on their video camera while in class so the teacher can see what he or she is doing
  • Check in on your child’s screen several times a day to see if they have YouTube or video games open in other tabs
  • Reach out to your child’s teacher if you haven’t had a conference and ask if your child is participating and turning in assignments
  • Talk to your child about your expectations for their learning and doing their work each day
  • Ask your child to show you their assignments on Google Classroom once a week (You can see what is due and what has been turned in)

We appreciate all you are doing and have done to support us in this new normal.  It is  hard work and we see all the help you are providing every day. Thank you.

Reminder:  Referral Window For Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV Screening Consideration Ends December 1

Tuesday, December 1 is the close of the window (Sept 8-Dec 1) for parents to submit a referral form for their student to be screened for full-time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Level IV. The parent referral form, submitted to the school, is one pathway to have a student screened for AAP Level IV. Parents should not wait for an announcement of the second grade screening pool if they want to make sure their student is screened for AAP Level IV in the coming cycle. Parents of students in grades 2-7 will need to submit the referral form by December 1.

Referrals will not be accepted after December 1. For more information about AAP Level IV or the screening process, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs.

Warmline Available to All Virginians Struggling to Cope

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused upheaval and unexpected stress in the lives of so many people. To support Virginians, the VA C.O.P.E.S. (compassionate, optimistic, person-centered, empowering support) warmline is available to offer support. The mental health tip line started in May 2020 and, thanks to new funding, the service will be extended through May 2021.

Any Virginian can make a confidential call and speak to a crisis counselor about what's bothering them. The line is available Monday-Friday 9am-9pm and 5pm-9pm on the weekends by phone or text at 877-349-6428. Spanish counselors are also available.

The warmline is available to residents who may be struggling to cope with the effects of the pandemic including isolation, fear, grief, and anxiety. Let’s Talk About Character

Cam red

What Does Strong Character Mean?

Helping Your Child Become a Responsible Citizen

A weekly Cameron School Counseling Series

Character is a set of qualities, or values, that shape our thoughts, actions, reactions and feelings.

People with strong character...are honest and fair

show compassion           display self-discipline in setting and meeting goals      make good judgments      show respect to others

show courage in standing up for beliefs              have a strong sense of responsibility      are good citizens who are concerned for their community      maintain self-respect

Honesty and Fairness

Simply put, honesty means being truthful with ourselves and with others. It means caring enough about others not to mislead them for personal benefit. It means facing up to our mistakes, even when we have to admit them to others or when they may get us into trouble.

Fairness means acting in a just way and making decisions, especially important ones, on the basis of evidence rather than prejudice. It means "playing by the rules" and standing up for the right of everyone to be treated equally and honestly.

To understand the importance of being honest and fair, children need to learn that living together in a family, community or even a nation depends on mutual trust. Without honesty and fairness, trusting each other becomes very difficult, and families—and societies—fall apart.

Words of caution: There is a big difference between being dishonest—lying or cheating—and "making things up," as children often do in fantasy play. If children are taught that not telling the truth is "a bad thing," some young children might assume that it is also a bad thing to pretend to be a princess or an astronaut. Although you should discourage your child from deliberately lying and cheating, you should also let him know that it is fine to role play and pretend.

What You Can Do

  • Be a model of honest relations with others.
  • Discuss with your child what honesty is and is not. Point out, for example, that being honest doesn't mean saying something in a hurtful or mean way.   Kindness goes along with honesty.
