Justice Newsletter - November 15

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

Beginning tomorrow, November 16, Mondays will be completely asynchronous. Students will no longer participate in a synchronous advisory class. Instead, they will be required to complete a 4th period/advisory google form to record their attendance for the day. All teachers will be available via Office Hours on Monday for students needing any assistance.

As many of you have heard, Dr. Brabrand shared at the board meeting last week that high school students who have selected face-to-face learning have a tentative return date of January 26, 2021. We are working hard on planning and preparation for the transition back to school. The focus of our professional development for teachers has been on ways to support student centered instruction and engagement. We will look to incorporate what we know with the concurrent instructional model. Our safety and security team is ensuring we have all of the necessary equipment and protocols in place as we invite more students into the building. As you know, health conditions are ever changing. The division is monitoring conditions carefully and will adjust this timeline as needed.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend. As always, please feel free to reach out to me or a member of the admin team.

Senior Transcripts/Letters of Recommendation

Students must turn in their transcript requests to the Student Services office 30 days in advance of the college deadline. Students who are applying to colleges with a December and January deadlines need to submit their requests to the transcript assistant in Student Services promptly. These reminders are sent in an effort to avoid unnecessary stress. The transcript request form is available on the counselor’s Google Classroom and by clicking here: JHS Transcript Request Form. Please contact your child’s school counselor if you have any questions.

The 6th Annual Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) Showcase

The 6th Annual Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) Showcase hosted by Tuscarora High School.  This event is designed to expose our school community to the many options that are available at HBCUs.  We want to expose and educate our school communities and encourage all students, regardless of ethnicity, to include these institutions during the college selection process.  There are over 30 HBCUs committed to the 6th Annual HBCU Showcase.

For more information visit our event page:  https://sites.google.com/lcps.org/thshbcu

In addition to the HBCUs that will be in attendance, there will be a guest speaker, NCAA presentation, and community scholarships.  We will be offering this in a virtual format.

“Advertisement of this opportunity does not constitute sponsorship or endorsement of the sponsoring organization or the enrichment opportunity by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or a specific FCPS school. This opportunity utilizes Zoom, an online technology video and web conferencing tool that has not been approved for use in FCPS by the FCPS Department of Information Technology. Numerous outside organizations are utilizing Zoom to provide services and resources to students and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students should gain permission from their parent or guardian before engaging in any non-FCPS enrichment opportunity and families should review and agree to the Terms of Service and User Agreements for Zoom before participating.”

School Board Votes to Make Changes to 20-21 Calendar

The Fairfax County School Board has voted to make Inauguration Day—Wednesday, January 20, 2021—a holiday for Fairfax County Public Schools students and employees, and Juneteenth—June 19, 2021—a holiday for employees that will be observed on Friday, June 18, 2021.

On the 2020-21 school year calendar, January 20, 2021, had been listed as an instructional day for students and regular workday for all employees.

Previously, during every fourth year, Inauguration Day was designated as a holiday for students and employees. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently authorized its 2021 holiday schedule, which includes Inauguration Day as a holiday for Fairfax County employees.

In an effort to further create an inclusive environment, Juneteenth was included as a holiday in 2020; it was recently included by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors as a holiday for county employees. Virginia has also passed legislation to observe Juneteenth as an official holiday for state employees.
