November 25 to November 27 - Thanksgiving Break

Message from the Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

As you saw from Dr. Brabrand’s email to the community this afternoon, the current health metrics for Covid-19 cases in our community now exceed the threshold for additional students and staff to expand our in-person learning.  This means that Kindergarten students will not start in-person instruction tomorrow as planned. Thresholds have been developed which include the “Total number of Cases Per 100,000 Persons” and the “Percentage of PT-PCR Tests that are Positive during the last 14 Days.” Please see the explanation of these thresholds on the Return to School page of the FCPS website under Metrics for In-Person Instruction https://www.fcps.edu/returntoschool.  These indicators guide decisions on when new groups of students can begin in-person instruction. They also determine the criteria for when existing in-person instruction may need to be transitioned back to a virtual setting. If you are interested in seeing the metrics of any particular day in Fairfax County, you may do so by viewing the CDC K-12 School Metrics.

I do understand how disappointing this news will be for many of our students and families. Our teachers have worked hard to prepare our kindergarten classrooms and the building is ready. We look forward to welcoming our youngest learners into the building just as soon as the health metrics allow! We will be moving forward with the kindergarten teacher changes as communicated last week. We will not be changing this placement for the remainder of the year as we are positioning ourselves for a successful pivot. Our Kindergarten students participated in Morning Meeting today with their new class and they will log in tomorrow to virtual learning in these new classes.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for the support that you have shown me and all of our amazing Wolftrap staff members this year. It continues to be a privilege for me to spend my days in the company of our teachers and your children.  Working alongside you, we have partnered in ways we never thought possible for all of our students to find success this year.

May your Thanksgiving be full of happiness with your family and some well-deserved rest!

Sincerely,

Teresa  Khuluki

Not Using Your FCPS Laptop?

If you have chosen full-time virtual learning for your child and your child is not using their FCPS-issued laptop, please consider returning it to the school. Returns can be made to the office Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm.

November 25-27

Please remember that we will have no School on November 25-27 for Thanksgiving Break.

New Employment Opportunity in Fairfax County Public Schools- MONITORS

FCPS schools and centers will be hiring classroom monitors to provide in-person classroom assistance for students when a staff member remains virtual. If you would like more information about the position, please review the job description and qualifications online and apply if interested. Please feel free to share the information about this opportunity with anyone else you think may be interested. Wolftrap is in need of several monitors and it would be wonderful if we could hire a community member to serve in this role!

Library Curbside Pickup for Second Quarter

Curbside pickup has been going well and will continue for the second quarter. To see the list of upcoming pickup dates, as well as a refresher on the process for reserving books, click here.

Giving Back to Others!

The Madison Pyramid schools have joined together for a canned food drive. A box will be outside Door 1 until December 14th for community members to drop off canned goods and other non-perishables. We've already had a lot of donations and hope that trend continues. The food we collect will directly support our community, and we are hoping to help as many families as we can!

Another opportunity to give back to others is being provided by our amazing Book Fair Committee!! When purchasing books for your children for the upcoming holidays, please consider donating money to a book fund for our sister school, Mosby Woods ES. When the Book Fair ends, the staff at Mosby Woods will be able to purchase books for identified children in need. This is such a worthy cause and I hope our community can overwhelm them with books!

Return to School Family Guide

A Family Resource Guide has been created to help prepare families and students to a return to in-person learning and to address frequently asked questions. The Resource Guide is available online and can be translated into multiple languages.

Elementary Grading and Reporting

A parent information document has been created which includes information specific to Quarter 1 in our current environment and information parents typically have access to on the Elementary Progress Report envelope.

New to FCPS Student Speech, Voice, and Language Screenings: Kindergarten through 3rd Grade

Per Virginia Child Find Regulations (8 VAC 20-81-50), students newly enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools in kindergarten through 3rd grade must be screened in the areas of speech, voice, and language to determine if a referral for an evaluation for special education and related services is indicated. Screenings will be coordinated at each school by the assigned speech-language pathologist(s). Screenings may take place in-person or virtually.

Screenings for new to FCPS students in kindergarten through 2nd grade who are currently enrolled will be initiated the week of December 1, 2020.  Screenings for new to FCPS students in 3rd grade who currently enrolled will be initiated the week of January 4, 2021.  Students who enroll after their grade level returns to in-person instruction will be screened within 60 business days of enrollment.

Coping Strategies for Anxious Kids

Webinar Highlights:

  • How to identify an anxious child

Wofltrap PTA

chick

On November 9th, Wolfie and Mrs. Burdett saw multiple wonderful families picking up their Chick-Fil-A. Both curbside and delivery orders earned Wolftrap PTA $113.54! Thank you all who participated in our first Dining 4 Dollars!

We'd also like to report we have seen record donation numbers from AmazonSmiles this year. We are seeing an increase of more than $400 per quarter (a $300 increase)! Thank you to all who have set up their AmazonSmiles account to donate to Wolftrap PTA! This money supports our school in so many ways (e.g. manipulatives for the entire school, new applications for grade levels, teacher grants for classroom items). If you haven't registered, see our website here to learn how to set up your AmazonSmiles to donate a percentage to the Wolftrap PTA. This is a great way for families to contribute to Wolftrap PTA without hassle and stress.

Important PTA updates:

  • Wolftrap Directory: The Wolftrap paper directory has been delayed given many logistical changes this year. Our directory committee is working hard to get updates in, checked, and out for production. Upon delivery of the paper directories, distribution to PTA members will be coordinated. The electronic directory via AtoZ Connect is available now. Any family can use AtoZ Connect to access the directory virtually. If you would like a physical directory but have not become a PTA member yet, don't fret! You still have time to join here.
  • Flamingo Flock: The PTA flamingo flock has been fully named! We are so happy the community continues to enjoy the flock. For the full list of flamingo names, check our PTA website here.

Stay safe and strong Wolftrap!

Book Fair

Bookfair

Ready, set, go……The Book Fair has finally arrived! Starting November 13 until December 1 you can purchase books through our new virtual Book Fair. Just click the link here and be transported to Wolftrap’s virtual wonderland of books.

The virtual format makes it easier to create wish lists and send them to extended family and friends. This means that loved one’s near and far can visit the Wolftrap Book Fair and have books ready for holiday gifts. Remember that a percentage of all sales go directly to the PTA. As in prior years our wonderful teachers and specialists have made wish lists of books that can be purchased as well.

While we struggle to adjust to our virtual world, we ask that you and your extended family consider donating to our sister school!  A small donation will provide a reading adventure for those not as fortunate as we find ourselves.

Further details can be found on Wolftrap PTA website here.

Cultural Arts Assembly- A Success

piano1

Thank you so much to all who participated in the PTA-sponsored Cultural Arts Assembly on November 9th and October 26th, featuring Dr. Rok Palcic, performer, educator, and founder of Music School 21.  Wolftrap students explored the fundamentals of rhythm, listened to music across eras and genres, and even danced to a song about our school!  Students asked questions of Dr. Rok and several talented Wolftrap students performed impromptu concerts for the audience - what a talented community we have!  For those who missed it, highlights and a video will be posted on the Music School 21 Wolftrap page. Click here!
