Behavior Strategies and Support in the Home

Providing REINFORCEMENT to children!
Reinforcement is a technique used to reinforce when a child is displaying appropriate behavior. Using positive reinforcement increases the likelihood that a behavior will be repeated in the future. Reinforcement can also be an effective way to encourage and motivate your child to be responsible, do their chores, get along with their siblings, or complete their assignments without arguing.

There are many ways to reinforce the behavior you want to encourage.  You can positively reinforce a child’s behavior by:

  • Clapping and cheering
  • Giving a high five
  • Giving a hug or pat on the back
  • Giving a thumbs-up
  • Offering a special activity, like playing a game or reading a book together
  • Offering verbal praise
  • Giving extra privileges
  • Giving tangible rewards

Aim to offer reinforcement right away once the good behavior starts and continue to provide consistent reinforcement throughout. This will give your child a sense of success and encourage them to continue to demonstrate the appropriate behaviors.

Remember behavior goes where reinforcement flows!

Reminder for Parents/Guardians about SIS ParentVUE

This year more than ever, SIS ParentVUE (PVUE) is an essential tool for parents/guardians to keep up with their student’s attendance, progress report cards, and more. This will be the first quarter that we have offered a PDF version of the progress report and ES parents/guardians now have the option to “Go Paperless” for all report cards and progress reports. We want to start establishing the PVUE habit early with ES school parents/guardians. At the end of last school year, we reached a high of 80% of FCPS students with at least one parent/guardian with a PVUE account. We want to keep those account numbers and the usage going up so we can rely on it as a communication tool with parents/guardians.

Please access PVUE periodically to check in on your student(s) attendance and to view progress reports at the end of each quarter.  If you have not yet created a PVUE account, please do so by reaching out to the school SIA to provide an activation code. Details on what can be found in PVUE and how to activate a new PVUE account using your activation code can be found here - Student Information System - SIS Parent Account Overview

Tech Support for Parents and Students

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, FCPS has launched a new Parent Technology Help Desk. The help desk can be reached at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS) and will be answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Parents or guardians can call this number for basic tech support with parent accounts, help with FCPS student devices and technical assistance with other FCPS applications. If help desk staff members are unable to solve the issue, they will enter a support ticket on behalf of the parent/guardian to escalate the issue to the appropriate FCPS team. Parents who need help in a language other than English can inform the help desk staff when they call of their preferred language, and an interpreter will join in on the call.

FCPS has also set up Parent and Student Technology Support portal at https://itweb.fcps.edu/itsupport/ to allow older students and parents/guardians to request technology help directly. When a support request ticket is entered through the portal, it is auto-routed to the TSSpec at the appropriate site to expedite service.

Library Updates

Curbside Checkout

Curbside Checkout is our way of getting the Hunt Valley ES library books into the hands of readers.  It is completely voluntary and is a service to the students and families of Hunt Valley.

 Three steps:

  1. Pick your book(s).  If you know what you want, put the books on hold in Destiny (the library catalog).  If you need some advice or aren’t quite sure the titles you’re wanting, use the Google Form to get assistance from the librarians.
  2. Pick your time.  Pick a time that works for your family on the SignUp Genius.  If it’s after 3pm on Friday – pick a time on the FOLLOWING Monday.
  3. Pick up your books. Monday, Hunt Valley ES (door 8), between 2pm and 6pm

Have a question?  Please email your librarian at crbartlett@fcps.edu.

First Chapter Fridays

Celebrate the end of the week by experiencing the first chapter of a book.  Check the HVES Library Google Site for this week’s First Chapter Friday. (You’ll need to be logged in to your fcpsschools.net account.)

First Chapter Friday is White Bird, a graphic novel from R. J. Palacio (yes, that same R.J. Palacio who wrote Wonder).  This is a story from Julian.  A school project leads Julian to learn about his grandmother’s experience as a Jewish girl in occupied France.

Check Destiny for this title and more books today!
