This Week at Frost - November 6, 2020

This Week in Review

Greetings Frost Middle School Families,

Happy Friday! Phew! What a long week!

Our students started it off with some time to catch up on work or rest on our teacher workdays. The kids were in need of a bit of a break, so I hope they took full advantage as we entered into the second quarter.

I hope you all had an opportunity to exercise your civic duty this week and voted if you haven't done so already! The country is awaiting the outcome of the election and I realize there may be increased anxiety or unease as we wait for the final announcement. I hope you all take some time over the weekend to get out and enjoy the weather and, possibly, get away from the minute by minute news reports.

We have a few events coming up over the next two weeks. Please take a moment to review what’s new in “In Other News”.

Finally, we are happy to report our long-time parent liaison, Ms. Angela Aldave is moving on! She has accepted the position of Family Engagement Representative for Region 5 in FCPS! Although we will miss her at Frost, we know she will continue to do amazing things at the county level! Ms. Aldave is a valued community member and respected colleague.  We will still be in close contact with Ms. Aldave as Frost MS in Region 5!

Join me in congratulating Ms. Aldave!!!

Have a great weekend!

Take good care,

 Anthony

We are #ONEFrost!

Math Inventory

The Math Inventory is a universal screener and growth monitoring assessment that measures math growth on the Quantile Framework® for students in Grades K to 12 (Kindergarten through Algebra II or High School Integrated Math III).  All FCPS middle school students enrolled in the following courses will need to complete the test in November:

  • Math 7
  • Math 7 Honors
  • Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra and Algebra Honors

All math classes are giving students instruction on how to log-in and username/password information (as they did with the reading inventory in English earlier this year).  The majority of classes, with the exception of Algebra Honors, introduced the test this week by showing a short video and some students will have time to begin the test in class.  Completion will be assigned as an asynchronous activity due in November.  We have attached additional information (general instructions and accessing the test) in case students have additional questions while at home taking it independently.

Picture Day – November 11

Picture Day at Frost MS will be Wednesday, November 11 from 12:00 – 7:00pm.  The make-up day for pictures will be January 11 from 9:00am – 2:00pm.

We are scheduling pictures on November 11 in 15-minute increments.  Please sign up for a slot at this Signup Genius link:

Equity

Frost Equity Town Hall

Frost Middle School invites you to participate in our first Virtual Equity Town Hall on Thursday, November 12th from 6:00-7:00pm. The purpose of our time together is to engage in a shared conversation around our commitments to equity and how we are keeping equity at the center of our work this school year.

This town hall will be facilitated by our Equity Committee Team.  In addition to sharing our commitments, we will also share information about our Equity Audit, No Place for Hate, and we will present two guiding questions to solicit feedback around experiences and practices in our school community.

We hope you will join us to contribute to the conversation.  A link will be sent to our families on Tuesday, November 10.

School Supply Pickup – November 16

The next school supply pickup day will be on Monday November 16, from 8-12 and 1-5.  Courses that will distribute supplies are:

  • All 8th grade students for English
  • All 7th grade students for English
  • Engineering (7th grade classes, only from 1PM-5PM)
  • FACS (only from 1PM-5PM)
  • Library check out

If your child is enrolled in one or more of those classes, please drive to Frost during the stated pick up time to gather their materials.  You will need to bring a piece of paper with your child’s name (first and last), grade number, and course enrolled in.  For English classes, please include teacher name and period number.  Students are not required to come but may.  All drivers & passengers must remain in their vehicle at all times.

When you arrive at Frost:

  • Use the attached map to follow the traffic pattern.

Supply Traffic Map 2nd quarter.docx

  • Determine what station(s) you need to stop at.  You do not need to stop at every station.
  • Drive to the station your child needs supplies from.
  • Show the staff member your paper
  • The staff member will place those supplies in your vehicle
  • Exit station/parking lot carefully!

Please note that 7th grade students or students who are not checking out library books will use Exit 1 to leave the parking lot.  English students will be picking up a novel.  Students who already own the class novel or prefer to access the book digitally may do so and are not required to receive a copy from Frost.

To help traffic flow, cars will be able to move around other cars that are stopped for supplies.  Drivers will need to move slowly at all times in the parking lot and check for other vehicles while moving between stations.  Some Frost Staff will be on site to assist with traffic, but we ask for slow driving at all times for their safety and yours.

Save the Date!  Family Life Education Program Preview – December 1

On Tuesday, December 1st, the 7th and 8th grade Health and PE teachers will be holding a virtual meeting for parents to preview the Family Life Education Program.  This program, which is composed of the Emotional and Social health unit and the Human Growth and Development unit, tends to have sensitive topics.  Parents may choose to opt their children out of these lessons, either wholly or partially.   We strongly encourage parents to review the Middle School Family Life Education Program descriptions at this link:

https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle

More information about the virtual parent program will be coming soon.  If you have questions, please reach out to your student’s Health and Physical Education teacher.
