Dear Justice Families,
We are excited to have made it to the end of the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year! Thank you for supporting us on this virtual start. Our faculty and staff are grateful to be on this journey with our Justice community.
As many of you read in Dr. Brabrand’s email last Wednesday, we are all concerned about the tremendous amount of workload for students and staff. The pressure to “cover” all content is very real, and with significantly shorter instructional time, everyone is feeling the pressure. Last year, our staff began the work of identifying course essential standards. This has allowed us to stay focused on what students must know and be able to do by the end of each school year in order to be prepared to enter the next grade level and/or course.
In surveying students, parents, and staff on how to best manage student workload and assignments, beginning the week of November 16th, students will no longer be required to log into advisory on Mondays from 9:00 – 9:30 AM. Instead students will have uninterrupted time on Mondays to continue to work on their school work and Exact Path modules. Teachers will continue to be available to support students during Monday office hours. The school is required to mark attendance on Mondays. Students will be responsible for logging in to their 4th period/Advisory teacher’s Google Classroom and completing the Google attendance form posted by the teacher. Students will hear more information about this during their November 9th advisory class.
In addition, first quarter assignment due dates have been extended to Monday, November 2nd at 5PM. Justice High School moved away from late work penalties so students will receive full credit on their assignments once graded. Please remember that this year, we also changed to a rolling grade book. Though your child’s quarter grade may not represent an assignment submitted late, with a rolling gradebook, grades for individual assignments from each quarter carry over and build upon the previous quarter. Therefore, quarter grades are a snapshot of a student’s current progress in the course and demonstrate performance to that date, not just for that quarter. Final grades are determined from all assignments and assessments throughout the year, regardless of the quarter the work was completed.
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.
Please join us for a Return to School Town Hall on Thursday, November 5th from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM.
