Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

This week we welcomed back our English Learner Newcomers in grades 3-6 on Monday morning.  Currently, these students and our preschoolers are the only cohorts of students who have phased back into the building, but we shared on Tuesday at our Principal’s Coffee the latest information on FCPS’ phase in plans.  Here is the recording and the slide deck from this presentation, in case you were unable to attend and missed our eNotify message.  Today is the final day to make any changes to your In Person or Virtual Learning selection for your child for the school year; please make any updates in ParentVue or let us know your preferences via this Google Form before 11:59pm tonight.  We will send out one final confirmation email over the weekend so you can be assured that your choice has been received.

As a reminder, today’s instruction will end at 1:20pm for all of our classes.  Monday, Nov. 2 and Tuesday, Nov. 3 are teacher workdays and student holidays, so there will be no live instruction and no independent work assigned by teachers.

Stenwood ES Playground Update

We kindly ask that you do not bring your children to the Stenwood ES playground to play during school hours beginning Monday, November 16th. As we welcome more children and adults back to our buildings, they will utilize the outdoor spaces.

Mondays: 9:00am - 12:00pm

Tuesday - Friday: 8:20am - 3:40pm

Positivity Project: Perspective

PP Logo

This week, we are focusing on Perspective. You appreciate that people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view.

“When you look at a field of dandelions, you can either see a field of weeds, or a field of wishes...”

                                              ~Julie Israel

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • Why is it important to look at things from a different point of view?
  • What are the benefits of looking at things from different perspectives?
  • Why is it important to have perspective in your relationships with others?

Yearbook Information

Yearbook Photo

Yes, We Will Have A Yearbook!

Students and families may not have a connection to the physical brick and mortar school building yet, but we are still Stenwood Stingers just the same!

To capture this unusual year and to make our yearbook a reality, we need photos of our beautiful stingers in their individual learning hives.  Therefore, we are calling on our community for some help!

Each week, we will be asking for different photos to be uploaded to Yearbook Snap.  Access Code: stenwood.

We are looking at setting up a safe, scheduled, socially distant, optional picture day with our vendor.  We will also be asking to collect photos from you, we ask that they are either camera images or cell phone photos without the live feature attached. If you upload photos and the ending is .HEIC instead of .JPG, we are unable to use them in the yearbook.  We look forward to seeing everyone’s photo in the yearbook this year!

This week, we are looking for Back to School, Pumpkin Patrol, and Virtual Learning Pictures. Feel free to send us any snapshots from the first day of school and beyond!

More information about pre-ordering a yearbook will be included next week!

“Go Paperless” Progress Reports

Save Paper Pic

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all ES parents to allow them to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of SY 20/21. This will not impact any other mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for ES students and report cards. To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians will need to log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless"

All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports. The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all their associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian has already selected “Go Paperless” for their secondary student, the option will now apply to any ES siblings as well.

It’s Time for the Stenwood Library Storybook Pumpkin Festival!

***TODAY IS THE FINAL DAY TO SUBMIT PICTURES!***

Even though we can’t have pumpkins in the library, we can still celebrate good books and creativity!  Students should pick a favorite storybook character and decorate a pumpkin.

Pumpkin 1
Pumpkin 2

Instead of giving clues about the character, make a sign saying who the pumpkin is and which book it is from, then take a picture.

Send the picture to Mrs. Cole by THIS AFTERNOON for inclusion in a school-wide slide show.  The slide show will be in the Library Schoology course.

Pumpkin 3

If you need inspiration, you can look at the included pictures and/or access the Library/Materials Schoology course for a look at previous years’ pumpkins.  As always, please contact Mrs. Cole if you have any questions.

Schoology Quick Tips

The Schoology Calendar is an important, organizational element for student courses and groups. It keeps events and due dates organized and easily accessible. When you are in the Student View, you can access your student’s Schoology Calendar by clicking on the Calendar icon in the top menu bar. This will allow you to view events and due dates by the month, week, or day. Each item is color-coded depending on the courses, groups, school, or personal events. Due dates for assignments, assessments and important course related events are automatically added to your student’s calendar and managed by the instructor. (Your student can add their own items, appointments, and reminders to the calendar.)  Learn more: http://bit.ly/schoologycalendar

The Upcoming Item List shows work that is due in the future. Even if your child already completed it, the item will show as a reminder. To see what work has been turned in, check the Grades area in Schoology. If the work has been graded, you will see that noted. If not, click on the assignment to see your child’s submission.

Grab and Go Sites Updates

In addition to the Grab and Go Site at Cunningham Park, we have a “bus stop” Grab and Go at the front entrance to Stenwood from 7:25 - 7:35 in the morning.  You are able to pick up both breakfast and lunch during that time frame.  Here are some other stops that may be closer to your house.  All FCPS students are eligible to receive a free lunch if you need the nostalgia of the milk carton, string cheese or square pizza!

Lunch Schedule

If you need additional support, please contact Mrs. Hapangama or Mrs. Appleton.

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications are available for those who qualify and wish to initiate or renew their applications for the 20-21 school year.  Your child(ren)’s application from last school year is only good for the first few days of this school year. You must send in a new household application for each school year.  The application is available HERE
