Message from the Assistant Principal

Dear Wolftrap Families,

Welcome to November! Congratulations on reaching the end of the first quarter. Ms. Khuluki and I have started the task of sorting through schedules, and we will be communicating to you about that process as it progresses. In the meantime, we know that all of you and your families have been working hard on classwork and forging relationships with classmates. It has been wonderful to attend virtual classes and see the smiling faces of our Wolftrap students. Ms. Khuluki and I love to start our days with morning meeting, so that we get a chance to hear what students are learning about Positivity Project and other topics in classes. If you would like to have access to the Positivity Project online, let your teacher or me know, and we can give you the password to access other resources at home. Upcoming this month are the traits of Perspective, Bravery, and Gratitude. I can’t wait to learn more about these positive traits with your children.

Speaking of gratitude, I want to remind you about the Madison pyramid canned food drive. From November 9 - December 14, there will be a box at Door 1 for families to drop off canned goods between 8am and 4pm, Monday - Friday. These donations will directly support our community, and we are hoping to help as many families as we can!

As you know, part of my job at Wolftrap is helping students learn how to make positive behavior choices. Recently, Ms. Daigle, our school psychologist, shared a great article about helping to cultivate some of those positive choices at home during virtual learning. If you have not had a chance to view the article, please see the link here. https://www.apa.org/topics/covid-19/education-behavior-management

As always, we remain committed to supporting you and your family during this time. If there is any way that we can help, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you!

Best, Dr. Maggie Grove

Honoring Veterans

To honor our veterans, we are creating a presentation to be shown during the morning news show on November 11, and we need your help!

We are asking interested students to submit a picture of a veteran from their family or submit a picture of a piece of art they have created about veterans.

Submissions should be in .jpg format. Please send them to Mrs Feidler in the office (kfeidler@fcps.edu) by this Friday, November 6.

Coping Strategies for Anxious Kids

“Dry mouth, sweaty palms, a pounding heart. Everyone feels anxious once in a while. But for approximately one in eight teenagers, anxiety is more than just a temporary worry or fear — it can stress them out too much to even come to school. And that can leave parents desperate.” Kavitha Cardoza

Join Dr. Erin D. Berman, a Clinical Psychologist at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland for an important session helping children cope with anxiety.

Webinar Highlights:

  • How to identify an anxious child
  • How to change anxious thinking
  • The science and biological roots of anxiety in children
  • How computer technology is transforming the understanding of anxiety
  • Current treatment options

Wolftrap Student Directory- Verification Needed

You should have received an email from Wolftrap Elementary Directory with a link to the AtoZ Connect web-based system verification wizard.  Please verify your household information for the online and paper student directory.  This is your opportunity to manage how little or how much household information you want included in the directory.  Verifying/editing your directory data should not take more than 5 minutes.

Per FCPS Guidelines, any new families or incoming Kindergarten families that do not have older children attending Wolftrap ES must manually enter their address and phone number if they would like that information to appear in the directory.

If you submitted an FCPS Opt-Out Form to the front office, you should not have received an email from Wolftrap Elementary Directory and your child’s information will NOT be included in the online or paper directory.

Please complete the verification wizard by Thursday, November 5.  If you have any questions, please email directory@wolftrappta.org.

Cultural Arts Assembly

This fall, we're delighted to host Vienna-based Music School 21 for our Cultural Arts Assembly. The performance How Do We Make Music? was designed specifically for our Wolftrap students. Ally & Pally are a dynamic duo of extraordinary educators and stars of the revolutionary Music FUNdamentals™ online video course. By joining the virtual assembly, our Wolftrap students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of rhythm and melody. Students will use movement and gesture to engage in an interactive musical experience and will work together to develop music about Wolftrap Elementary! If you'd like to learn more about Music School 21, please visit https://musicschool21.com/

Last week, 2-6 grades were able to participate. Kindergarten and 1st will be able to participate on November 9. Please note the details below. The assembly is a PTA sponsored event using the PTA Google Meets which is not a FCPS virtual platform. To participate, parents need to sign up using the Google Forms below to receive the link the night before the assembly.

Artists in the Making (AIM)

AIM

Wolftrap Artist In the Making (AIM) is Back

Wolftrap AIM is back this November! AIM is a PTA sponsored project run by PTA parent volunteers that introduces our students to classic artists through application of hands-on art projections applying the artist techniques. This year we will not be performing these projects as part of a classroom activity. AIM is an optional activity for students and families to perform when most convenient to them.

Art supplies will not be provided so check out the supplies needed. The AIM committee will be working hard to use typical art supplies for these projects. If the specific color of paint or supply is not available, don't fret! Improvise!

Our first project in November repeats the Salvador Dali project as many students did not get to do it last year. This is how it will work. All materials can be found on our PTA website here.

  1. Do the Project: A list of material and a video, discussing the artist and step-by-step, is posted on our PTA website. In November we study Salvador Dali
  2. Two-weeks to perform the project: Your student has two weeks to complete the project anytime convenient to your families schedule. For November, your student has fromMonday, Nov 2 to Sunday Nov 15 to do the project.
  3. Share your project via FlipGrid or Facebook: A flipgrid location will be provided to share your project. There will also be a place on our PTA Facebook page to post students art work as well.
  4. Join a Gallery Walk: Sign-ups will be provided to join a Monday afternoon Gallery Walk. There will be a Gallery Walk for K & 1st, 2-4th Grade, and 5 & 6th grade. This month Gallery Walks will be Monday, November 16thvia the PTA Google Meets.

Book Fair

Bookfair

The Book Fair is coming....the Book Fair is coming....!  There is a new format, but the same books our kids love. The Book Fair will be a week-long event "open" online November 13th to December 1st. Stay tuned -- more to come on our PTA website and Facebook!

Community News

Scouting For Food is coming up! Wolftrap Scouts from Pack 1116 will be wearing masks and concentrating on social distancing while they go door to door collecting food from residents in our community for local food banks to feed those families with food insecurities. Food banks need our help more than ever before. We would like those in our community who want to participate to put out food in a bag by their front porch/door on the morning of November 14 (Collection Day) and then the scouts will drop off the collected food at 'Food for Others'.

Every year, the Committee for Helping Others (CHO), along with local elementary schools, participate in a bike donation drive to provide bikes during the holiday season to kids in need. Last year, they were able to give away 135 clean, safe bikes to children in Vienna. Between now and November 15, they will be accepting donations.  Bike donors can contact the CHO by email (cho@cho-va.com) or by phone (202-681-5279) to arrange the donation.
