Virtual & In-Person Learning Platforms

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is planning to bring additional student groups back to school for in-person instruction in the near future. We will follow strict safety and health protocols to minimize health risks for students and staff. To learn more, visit here.

Colvin Run ES staff will hold a Community Conversation on Thursday, October 29 at 7:00 PM.  If you are interested in receiving the link for this community conversation, you will need to sign-up here.  Because this communication is public, we are unable to post the link here. We will send the link only to registered participants on Wednesday afternoon.

The following groups of students will be returning to in-person instruction:

Group 5 - Kindergarten

Week of November 16

Group 6 - Grade 1 & 2

Week of November 30

Group 7 - Grades 3 - 6

Week of January 4

*Note: Start dates above are tentative and subject to change

We will use concurrent instruction for students who receive in-person instruction. This means students who elect in-person instruction will receive two days of teacher-led instruction in the school building and two days of teacher-led virtual instruction at home.

***Here is a video that demonstrates a model how concurrent classrooms could look. CRES kindergarten in-person classrooms are piloting a concurrent classroom setup that looks slightly different than this yet continues to provide two days of in-person and two days of virtual learning for our in-person students.

Students who elect all-virtual learning will continue to receive four days of teacher-led virtual instruction at home.

In either format, Mondays will be a full day of independent learning for students to give our teachers more time to prepare and plan the week’s lessons.

Additionally, in order for teachers to have the time to prepare for this change in instructional model, FCPS has set aside the dates below for students to work independently.  These will also be full days of independent learning for students.

Virtual vs. In-Person Learning Selection

Important note: As communicated this summer, we created classes based on parents' July 15 selection.  Most students at Colvin Run ES were placed in classes based on this selection.  At this time, a change in selection will result in a change of class assignment and classroom teacher. Knowing the potential impact to students and teachers that may occur as students switch platforms, we will evaluate any changes to determine if the current class size and teacher assignments can accommodate the requests prior to approval.

We will continue to strive to minimize the impact of this transition on students as we work to accommodate everyone’s preferences. We will continue to honor the choice you made in the FCPS July survey to determine the setting for instruction and no further action is needed.

  • If you chose in-person instruction, we will assume your student(s) will return to in-person instruction in accordance with the schedule above.
  • If you chose all-virtual instruction we will assume you will continue in that format.

If your circumstances have changed and you would like your child to change learning platforms, please pay special attention to the information below.

  • Please complete this Form to update your choice by 11:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, and we will try to accommodate your request based on the availability of staff and space.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we continue on this journey to deliver the best instruction for all FCPS students.

Sincerely,

Mr. Junge and Mr. Soderstrom

Book Character Day November 6 - Dress up/ Costumes

On Friday, November 6th, your child will have the opportunity to wear a costume or dress up as their FAVORITE BOOK CHARACTER to celebrate our Library Virtual Book Fair, which kicks off Monday, November 2nd.

Students are not to wear costumes to school October 30th.  Students wearing costumes will be asked to change before rejoining class.  If your family celebrates Halloween, as long as there is a book to match the costume, students are permitted to wear the costume on November 6 to participate in Book Character Day.  All students are encouraged to dress up Friday, November 6 to celebrate the first week of our Virtual Book Fair and a love of books.

Veterans Day Wall of Fame

On Wednesday, November 11, we will highlight our United States veterans and active military with a Wall of Fame.  We will be creating a Veterans’ Hall of Fame on which our CRES families can honor/remember our school community’s veterans and active military.  Click here for an information sheet to be completed and dropped off at Door 1 with a picture of the veteran.   We will post the picture and information sheet on a school-supplied ‘ready-made’ poster (see picture).  We will hang the poster in the Cafeteria windows for families to view from outside.  Families may bring in a picture and information sheet to add to a ready-made poster in the Front Office starting Friday, October 30.  All Hall of Fame posters must be submitted by Tuesday, November 10.  If you have your poster from last year, please drop that off for us.
