Glasgow Community Gazette - October 25

Glasgow Community:

It feels like just yesterday that we were celebrating the virtual opening of school and hosting Back to School Night, but unbelievably, 1st quarter will come to a close on Friday, October 30. Students should have all work quarter one work completed and submitted by this day in order for it to be reflected in their Q1 grades. As you anticipate receiving your student’s report card, we want to remind you that middle school is an important time not only for students’ academic growth, but also for their social and emotional development. During our virtual setting, we are intentional about cultivating a positive school culture to support the growth of our students in all of these areas.

As a reminder, there is a two hour early release on Friday, October 30. Our schedule will be revised for that day. Students will attend 2nd, 6th, and 8th periods, indicated by the times below. Take note that lunch time is different than usual. Students will access classes as usual through BbCU. If there are technical difficulties, please check your child’s Google Classroom for updates. There is no school for students on Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3. These days are student holidays and no asynchronous work will be posted.

Please note that FCPS Weekly Progress Reports generated through SIS will not be sent to parents between now and Friday, November 6 while first quarter grading is completed and report cards are generated. Additionally, the Grade Book and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE are closed until November 6th during the grading window while teachers work on updating grades.

As I’m sure you saw, Dr. Brabrand sent out information Friday about the return to school. The majority of Glasgow Middle School students are tentatively scheduled to return in person on January 26. You will be receiving a more formal email from me later this week about your intention to update your selection from the summer, either in-person or online. We will be holding Town Hall meetings on Monday, November 2, to answer any questions you might have about our preparations for the return to in person instruction. More information about these town halls to come.

Finally, to synthesize, here are upcoming dates to note:

  • Tuesday, Oct 27, PTA meeting re: Glasgow’s IB grading
  • Friday, Oct 30 - End of Q1 + Early Release
  • Monday and Tuesday, Nov 2 & 3 - No school for students
  • Monday, Nov 2, Parent Town Hall meetings (more information to come)

Please reach out with questions or concerns.

Important Information

Drive-thru Tuning - Please come to Glasgow on the 2nd or 4th Monday of each month if you need your violin, viola, cello, or bass to be tuned.  Ms. Dizon will be at Glasgow on those two Mondays each month from 9 am-12 noon.  Please set your instrument in the trunk of your car, if possible, before you arrive so that you can open the trunk for Ms. Dizon, instead of getting out and handing it to her.  Students should be able to do tuning at home with their fine tuners, but Ms. Dizon is available on these days for instruments that are VERY out of tune or if the fine tuner is not working any more.

School Counseling Fall Advisory Council - The school counseling team will be holding its fall advisory council on November 16th from 10:30 - 11:15am.  The purpose of the Advisory Council is to provide support, feedback and recommendations for the School Counseling team.  As a team, we serve the entire school, and we will be seeking student, parent/family, staff and community members to serve on our advisory council.  Of critical importance is for us to have diverse voices that represent our wider school community. If you are interested in serving on our Advisory Council, please contact  Greg Frantz (gdfrantz@fcps.edu)  or Emily Wasserman (ebwasserman@fcps.edu) to express your interest.

Parents must make the request no later than the end of the first quarter on 10/30/20. Once expunged, a course cannot be reinstated. The Request to Expunge form must be completed to make this request. SIS Weekly Progress Reports - Due to the delayed school opening and virtual start, SIS weekly progress reports to parents are now set to begin on Monday, October 5, 2020.  Please note this is a change from the original start date of September 21, 2020; therefore, middle and high schools may want to include the following notification and instructions for parents in their newsletters:

If you have registered for SIS ParentVUE and have a primary email address recorded in ParentVUE, you can receive your student’s Weekly Progress Report via email.  For the 2020-21 school year, Weekly Progress Reports are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 5, 2020.  This report provides a summary of your student’s grades for the current quarter.  To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE account and verify that you have a primary email address within the system.  It is listed under the “My Account” tab.

If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports, and click on “Update account.”  Once your email is confirmed, return to the “My Account” tab to activate and select your preferences for receiving these reports.  Emails will be sent according to your selected preferences.  Weekly Progress Reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email.  For additional help, refer to the quick reference guide for FCPS parents/guardians.

Parents can also access student grades through ParentVUE via the Grade Book tab.

Come with any level of math skills and learn to enjoy math more

Math Homework Club - Meets Thursday 7:30pm – 9 pm. Come every week or come when you have questions. We will work on individual problems related to homework.
