Justice Newsletter - October 17

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

I hope you are doing well. On Saturday, we hosted our second day of senior pictures. Additional dates are scheduled. If you have not scheduled a time, please go online to prestigeportraits.com to select and confirm your appointment time. You will need your student unique code sent earlier in the year to students' addresses on file. You can also call the Lifetouch Customer Service team at 800-445-1189 to confirm an appointment.

For those who watched the Fairfax County School Board meeting last Thursday, I understand that you may have questions about when our students will return.  As information and plans solidify, we will host town hall sessions and send out communication to help guide our families.  Our staff is looking forward to welcoming our students back as safely and as quickly as current health conditions will allow.

I have a few important reminders to share with you this week:

  • Den Time
    • In the upcoming week, you may hear your student talking about their Den Day assignment.  Last year, we implemented our Den Day program for the first time and feel very fortunate to continue this practice in a virtual setting.  Our Den Day time provides an opportunity for teachers to identify students who might benefit from additional support in order to master specific content or improve their overall performance within a class.
    • Students involved in Den Days will attend every Wednesday and Friday following their 4th period Advisory class from 10:20 to 11:05 am.  Our staff is incredibly grateful to have this dedicated time to support and ensure the success of our students!
  • Important Dates:
    • October 29th is PSAT for juniors.  It is asynchronous for the rest of our school as many teachers and staff are needed to proctor.
    • October 30th is a 2-hour release.
    • November 2nd and November 3rd are student holidays.

Have a great rest of your weekend!

Science Fair Information for Honors and IB I Science Courses

Students in an honors or IB I science course are required to complete an externally-moderated experimental or research piece. Students typically complete a science fair project that is presented at a school-wide science fair in January to fulfill this requirement. Judges at the school-wide fair recommend projects for meritorious promotion to the Regional Science Fair held in March, where students can win prizes and other honors. This year, the Science Department has determined that, to provide maximum flexibility and meet the course requirement, the school-wide science fair will be held during the fourth quarter, which precludes eligibility for the Regional Science Fair.

However, the Science Department will provide any student interested in qualifying for the Regional Science Fair with the opportunity. Students pursuing admittance to the Regional Science Fair will work with their science teacher to establish an appropriate timeline and project. To be considered for the Regional Science Fair, interested students must complete their project and submit it for adjudication by January 25, 2021. All projects must be suitable to be conducted at home following all FCPS safety guidelines under parental supervision, as there is no guarantee students will be able to access resources at school. Due to FCPS regulations, students will not be able to borrow items to complete their project. Please note that entrance to the Regional Science Fair is merit-based; therefore, completion of a project by January 25, 2021, does not guarantee admission.

Students will be asked to express their interest in the opportunity to earn entry to the Regional Science Fair to their teacher by Monday, October 26, 2020. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s science teacher or Sarah Wegener (sbwegener@fcps.edu), Justice High School’s Science Fair Coordinator.

Asynchronous Learning Day on Thursday, October 29th

Justice HS is hosting registered grade 11 students to participate in the PSAT exam on Thursday, October 29, 2020. We will be utilizing staff to facilitate the exam at Justice HS. October 29th will run asynchronously for all staff and students in all FCPS high schools. Students not participating in the PSAT are expected to log onto Google Classroom and complete the asynchronous work that is posted by their teachers for their Red Day classes (Periods 1, 3, 5, 7) during regular school hours (8:10 am – 2:55 pm). Attendance will be based on student engagement in their asynchronous work or participation in the PSAT exam. Grade 11 students who are participating in the PSAT exam are not expected to complete the asynchronous work for their classes that day.

In Person Tech Support at Justice

Students and families are encouraged to come to Justice HS, if there’s a tech issue that can’t be solved remotely.  In-person tech support is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-2:30pm.

Families can also call the tech hotline: 833-921-FCPS for additional support.

Tag Day 2020: Virtual Edition

Like so many other things, Tag Day 2020 has been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic and appropriate health safety protocols. This year, rather than walking door-to-door, the Justice High School band, chorus and orchestra students are bringing our show directly to your inbox. Click here: https://bit.ly/JHSTagDay

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation.

Your gift enables the JHS Music Department to fund additional instruments, equipment, special music, software, technical services, and tailored instruction, particularly important in our virtual learning world. Tag Day donations also support live concerts and competitions, as soon as we are allowed to participate.

Please make a donation to KEEP THE MUSIC ALIVE at Justice. Two ways to give:

  • By mail: Send your check (made payable to: Justice High School Band Boosters, Inc.) to PO Box 1640, Falls Church, VA 22041.
  • Online: Visit our new webpage at: https://bit.ly/JHSTagDay. Include your email address to receive a receipt for your tax records.

Now more than ever, our world needs the joy and optimism music engenders. As always, your donation supports ALL JHS Music Programs.

Won’t you please help us to KEEP THE MUSIC ALIVE for our students?

Field and Track Use

The Justice High School track and fields are open to public use when they are not in use by school programs or by permitted community use groups. As we look to begin a return to school for some of our students, we also look to a return to use by physical education classes. We wanted to remind the community that the field and outdoor facilities are closed to the public during the regular school day (8am-3pm).

In addition, our athletic teams are continuing through a process of “Return to Play”. This includes offseason workouts that occur after school hours. Per, the policy above, the field and track are closed to public use during these times. Currently, our outdoor facilities are scheduled for SCHOOL USE from 3:30pm-7pm Monday – Thursday and from 3:30-5:30pm on Fridays. These times are subject to change. In an effort to ensure the safety and health of our student athletes and coaches, we ask that any public use occur outside of these times. Thank you!
