A Message from Ms. Jankovich

Dear Sangster Families –

I hope everyone is having a good week.

For those of you who were not able to attend the October PTA meeting, two members of our clinical team shared strategies for helping to make distance learning a better experience for both students and parents.

Here is a summary of what was shared:

Create an optimal learning space

It is important that your child has an optimal learning space, or spaces, in order to focus on their school day. It may help to have fidgets easily accessible, such as putty, stress balls, or a tangle toy. If your child is having trouble staying seated, explore different seating options, such as a stool, standing up, an exercise ball, or sitting/laying on the floor.

Individualize Your Child’s Day

Pay attention to patterns with your child. Are they getting restless around the same time every day? Try to build in extra movement breaks as needed and use a visual timer to let them know how long they have until they return to the computer.

For K-2 students, try a daily sticker chart to reinforce positive behavior. Choose one specific behavior to target (i.e. staying in your learning space, actively participating), and reinforce those behaviors.

For 3rd-6th, you can use a checklist to help them keep focused on what they need to do. You can link their completed checklist to a chosen reward (i.e. preferred screen time or family activity such as a weekend outing or a movie night).

If you have any questions or would like to have a brief consultation, please contact any member of the clinical staff:

Paula Augenstein, School Counselor (odd grades and Mrs. Belcher and Mrs. Bryan)

Lisa Railan, School Counselor (even grades and Ms. Lazcano and Ms. Phillips)

Maggie Wilkerson, School Social Worker

Becky Harris, School Psychologist

Thank you again for all you do. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

Sincerely,

Allison Jankovich

Sangster Library Book Checkout is Here for Grades 5 and 6 Only

Beginning October 14th, 5th and 6th Grade students will have the opportunity to "check out" books from the Sangster Library!

Mrs. Oberdick, school librarian, met with interested students today to explain the process by which they can use the Destiny Discover system to place holds on library books (physical copies, not e-books) they want to check-out.  Holds must be placed no later than Friday, October 16th. Each student will receive two books based on their placed holds during the curbside pick-up, and she will make every attempt to provide each student at least one (if not both) of their requested books.

Curbside pick-up will be Wednesday, October 21st between 4:00PM - 5:30PM.  Just as with the pick-up of student materials, parents are asked to pull into the Sangster bus loop, remain in their cars, and hold up a sign with their child's name and teacher.  Staff will be there to assist you.  Masks are required.

If you cannot make the scheduled pick-up time, you can pick up your child's library books up any time after October 21st in the main lobby between the hours of 8:30AM - 3:30PM, Monday - Friday. You do not need to call ahead, just ring the doorbell and announce you are there to pick up a library book.

Want to return a Sangster Library book? No problem!  We always have a labeled box outside - just drive-up and drop-off anytime during school hours.

Thank you for being patient with us as we navigate this new system of library book check-out.  After October 21st, stay tuned for how students in grades K - 4 can also check out their books from the Sangster Library!

New: Fairfax Meal Kits Offered at Select Locations

Dinner and snacks are now offered at select locations. FCPS wants to provide every FCPS student daily access to nutritious meals. Fairfax Meal Kits are offered at several sites, containing seven (7) days of breakfast and lunch items packed in bulk.

Meal kits will be available for pick up from 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., or until supplies are exhausted.  All meals are available at no-cost to FCPS students and children eighteen (18) years of age and under.  Parents/caregivers may pick up for children and adults may purchase kits for $28.00.

More information is available online or by calling the Office of Food and Nutrition Services at 703-813-4800.

Sign up for Paperless Progress Reports

The “Go Paperless” option is now available to all elementary school parents to allow parents to only receive online progress reports starting the first quarter of School Year 2020-21. Choosing this option will not impact any mailings from FCPS other than the progress reports for elementary school students and report cards for secondary students.  The “Go Paperless” option will apply to all associated students, no matter what school level. If the associated parent and/or guardian selects “Go Paperless” for one of their students, the option will apply to all other siblings.

To take advantage of the paperless options, parents and/or guardians must log into ParentVUE, then go to “My Account” and select "Go Paperless".  All parents and/or guardians who live with the student and share the same address must have a SIS ParentVUE account and must select the paperless option to prevent mailing of the printed progress reports.

If you do not have a ParentVue Account, please contact our Registrar, Marian Hoelscher, at mthoelscher@fcps.edu.

Positivity Project

This year, Sangster will continue implementing the Positivity Project (P2). P2 is dedicated to empowering America’s youth to build strong relationships and to understand, appreciate, and exemplify the character strengths in us all. Every 1-2 weeks, students learn about a new character strength.

It is easier than ever for Sangster families to access P2 resources this year! The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).

Positivity Project - Week of October 11

This week’s Positivity Project focus is the Other People Mindset with an emphasis on being present and giving others your attention. This is a great week to talk with your child about those who have been present in their lives and how they have made a difference for them.

The site P2 For Families is available for connecting P2 to your home and you can learn more about the site here. Many of the slides are password protected and the password is P2 (case-sensitive).

Sangster Library e-Books

Did you know that Sangster students can access over a thousand new and popular e-Book titles?  Students simply log in to MackinVIA through their computer or other personal device using the website/app.  The weblink and video tutorials can be found on our Sangster Library homepage, which will require an FCPS Google login: https://tinyurl.com/sangsterlibrary.  All links can also be found on our public Sangster site under the "Library" tab.

Please contact our librarian, Nicole Oberdick at neoberdick@fcps.edu with any questions. Happy reading!

Fairfax County Public Library - LEAP Program

Effective October 1, all FCPS students (preK-12) can check out materials from the Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL), even if they don’t have a traditional library card or a card has been blocked due to fines.

Under the Library Equity Access Pass program (LEAP), a partnership with FCPS and FCPL, students need only their name, not a physical library card, to check out three items at a time for six weeks each (no renewals). LEAP accounts are never charged fines or fees.

LEAP image

A student can have a LEAP account in addition to a standard library account. Standard accounts allow users to place holds on materials and access FCPL’s digital resources, such as eBooks and databases.

Families can apply for a standard account online and in library branches

FCPS Cares

The FCPS Cares Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can acknowledge our Sangster staff members.
